Does a self portrait neccessarily have to include your face?

why tiptoe the line of acceptable knowing that voters are fickle?

the challenge description says, "Find your best side, and submit a self-portrait."

for many, that would be their backside...

Self-Portrait
Self-Portrait Revisited

these should give you an idea of what the voters like in a self-portrait challenge. my personal opinion, though, is that seeing your face isn't necessarily required. i doubt i'll show my face...ew ew ew!

Because to advance in photography sometimes requires that we explore our own perception more than mass appeal.

but to win a ribbon sometimes requires knowing what the voters want to see ... if he (or whomever) isn't interested in scoring well, why ask the question at all ... just do whatever will "advance your photography"?

For some that would be showing what is on the inside. Using a metaphor and a creative approach is considered easier to heal from than the use of a cutting instrument. If your face is not the primary in the image you will get hammered at voting time, so submit according to your creativity, but if your submission strays too far from the norm, take your drubbing like an artist (curled in the fetal position in your garret or drinking absinth to dull the pain)

There is a large creative space which won't get hammered for blatent disregard of theme, yet doesn't necessarily fit within the elasticity of many closed minds who require dictionary definitions to interpret a challenge theme.

He may have been looking for clarification on the definition, but not necessarily seeking a rigid space to work within. Different strokes for different folks.

My best side is the hair. But if I put a picture of my hair... everyone will know it's me :-/
Is that good or bad??

This being the third self-portrait challenge, I think there will be a lot less anonymity than normal. :p
