I want to sell more prints. I haven't really knocked myself out to do it thus far, partially cause I wasn't sure how to go about it. For those of you who regularly sell prints, do you advertise, go to trade shows, set up booths at street fairs, what?

I've heard the Photog's Market referenced many times, but rarely with real usage scenarios outside of a few books I've read. I woudl be interested to hear from people on this site who have successfully used that book to market their work.

I would suggest going to framing shops/galleries and showing them your work, they might be more interested in prints of local places/landmarks. Thats what I did, it worked for me... |

Andi, I've been selling greeting cards, magnets, matted only prints, and framed pieces. I bought the blank cards from Photographer's Edge (200 @ $.85/card or so) and have been selling them for $3 each or 5 for $15...which I find is really reasonable. Others' cards are priced at a minimum of $4 each. For the cards I use prints that...how should I word this...aren't my favorites or wall-worthy. They aren't bad shots, just not my best, imo. I've sold the cards at craft/art show type events so far. I also sold quite a few cards and prints to friends and coworkers before the holidays. I have framed pieces hanging in a gift store in Corning, NY (home of Corning Glass). I recently put some framed prints in a real estate office since people were complimenting the images of mine that the office had earlier purchased. I'm entering my first juried exhibit at the end of the month. Assuming I get in, I hope to sell something there as well. I currently use Smugmug (for everything, good and bad) but am considering setting up a professional site of my own for my best work. I need to set up a business name soon...I've been tossing around ideas for months and nothing has hit me yet. :-/
Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine.
Jen
Edit: Oops, that should say 6 for $15...not 5 for $15. ;-)

Excellent info, thank you both! This is definitely the kind of stuff I was hoping for- I'm not all that interested in being hired for photo shoots, I'd much rather shoot what interests me and see if I can make a little change on the side from it. These ideas will definitely help. Thanks!

You're welcome. That's my thinking as well. I want to do what I want and not what someone else wants...then it becomes too much like work/a job. :-) I just want to make whatever (little or lots) I can to help pay for this [expensive] little hobby I've chosen.
An idea I have for myself (which you may want to try) is to visit the local greenhouse and see if they'll let me use their plants and flowers as subjects. I'd even be willing to pay them a little $$ to do this. After getting the pics I would want to put them in cards and sell them at the greenhouse shop. I dunno. Maybe it's a dumb idea but I'd like to see if it work. People who buy flowers usually need a nice little card, at the last minute, to go with them. Right? :-)
