I need a big group hug or something... The external hard drive that houses all my photo originals (and I mean ALL), has just failed. I cannot access any files. Norton hangs when I try to diagnose the problem.

I also need a big spanky, cause there is this thing about "all eggs in one basket"... I was in the process of organizing all my files to do a major backup. Too late...

Anyone out there knows what to do?

If you look in the back pages of computing magazines, you'l find ads for data recovery services. They can get back almost anything if the platters aren't (too) physically damaged, but it can be very expensive. There's one called DriveSavers in Marin County (CA) which has a good reputation (referral from someone I trust).

Good luck!

Not cheap but these are the guys I use for Work related crashes...If there is stuff you have to have back you might find help there.

Ontrack Data recovery

How crashed is it? Funny noise crashed. Or does it just look like gobbly gook when you look at it via explorer?

yes, I have 35 gig of photos on this drive (over 25,000 photos). Entire 2 yrs worth of shooting. I am so mad at myself for trusting this drive. How could I have been so naive?

It's a Maxtor 150GB external drive. My husband uses another one just like that at work with no problems. I don't understand. I am just sitting here in disbelieve.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, but these things happen and just like children you have to keep them safe and in this case back up to multiple locations. Hmmm but guess I don't need to say that....

OK ... first thing is first ... here's a hug ... hmmm I'm sure that didn't help too much so...

I have included a web link for you that is in your area and I've used them before (not exactly cheap but these things aren't) however if it's your originals and I'm sure I wouldn't want to lose all my stuff.

Web Link //www.cdrdatarecovery.com/

Give them a try if you really need your data back, however if you do want to use a company like that it's better if you stop doing/trying recovery programs on your drive or you might corrupt more data. These guys can pretty much do anything.

Now my cheap solution... which I have used many a times and it's a secret so keep it hush hush ;-)

If you have a physical failure and the drive is clicking and won't read this is what you do...

Put the drive into your freezer ... Yes, I said freezer for the whole night. In the morning quickly pull it out and get it booted on your system and start transfering anything/everything you can off the drive before it's unusable again. Make sure you have enough diskspace on the destination drive first. If it stops working again and I would repeat and do that again but leave it in the freezer longer this time.

It's worked for me plenty of times but do this at your own risk ...

There are other easy things to try but this is the easiest without paying too much money for recovery.

PS: if you have a similar drive handy, exactly the same would be better it's also possible to change the drive controller ... it's just a couple of screws and swap it with a working one and you could be suprised with the results.

EDIT: PS Section

This will sound strange, but if the issue is the spindle on your drive, this may help you, for a short period of time. Place the drive in your refrigerator for an hour or so. This will cause constriction on the center pin. Many drives fail in this area because of heat. Take out of the cold, plug her in and if it spins up your golden, but probably not long enough to get all 80 gigs off.

No. I'm not crazy and this is not one of those haha I got you to do this thing. I'm dead serious. What do you have to lose except that it may not be this issue and it won't work: an hour of your time and a cold harddrive. The reward if it is this issue will be worth a few more trips to the fridge.

We use OnTrack as well, at work. $100 to tell you if they can recover your data, then anywhere up to around $1500 to get it for you.

Something else to look into...OnTrack has some pretty good software that can recover the data for failed drives. We've had decent luck with it as well.

Thank you all for advice. At this point I am willing to try anything. I have to get my work back, no matter what the cost. Some of the photos are work-related (big oooops).

This is yet another of the life's big lessons for me to learn. DO NOT SKIP BACKUP.

Considering that some of the photos are work related, perhaps your employer might consider picking up part of the costs you will incur to retrieve the photos,,,,,,,,, just a thought.

I'm not sure if there is anything YOU can do but I might be able to retrieve some files if I had the drive. PM me if you like me to look at it since were both in Toronto.
