I think it would be a relatively trivial thing to add Postal Code as an additional demographic data item on photographers' profiles. Doing so would allow things like proximity searches (e.g. show me all DPCers within 90 miles of my postal code). This is compatible with international accounts as postal code is a generally accepted location scheme.
This would prevent the user error/differences (e.g. "I say Chicago, you say Chicargo") in entering location information and could be validated quite easily when the user tabs out of the postal code field. There are databases of postal codes available for pretty cheap on the web.
Naturally, the person who doesn't want anyone to know where he/she is located can refrain from entering their code. |

trivial -- yes, as long as everyone uses the same form of postal code. I presume you were referring only to US postal codes, but I think a feature that limited its usefulness to a large portion of the members would be fairly low priority -- but who's to say, being an "Ignorant American®" I don't know if other areas of the world have postal codes, or anything similar enough to serve the same purpose.

Many/most definitely have codes, which could be used in conjunction with the country code (to establish the format). The problem is in accessing one or more databases to convert the codes into a physical locations which can be related to one another. |

I had been considering making the suggestion of adding GPS coordinates as an optional field in the submission box. I guess I'm a bit of a geek (understatement of the month), but it would seem the demographics here might indicate some support for it, at least among the DSLR crowd, i.e. the gadget junkies. :)
How very cool would that be: a combination digital photography and geocaching site.
In the mean-time, those interested could simply enter them in the commentary box. In fact, I think I'll start doing exactly this when I'm shooting away from home. |
