I know the pop up reflectors dont cost much, but what can I use in place of one? White posterboard?

Yes. Make sure it's completely white, and the bigger it is the better the flash quality. Make use of all its surface area.

I use 3 half sheets of white foam core board taped together. It's nice and big when opened up, and folds up easily and quickly to move around, and works great.
