In this shot, my reflection is easily viewable in the dogs eye .

Is there anything I can do about it now post-processing wise?

Any steps I should take to prevent this from happening again (besides not standing in front of the dog)

Use a flash that will overpower the ambient lights. A circular softbox and F11 or F16 would look good.

if I do not have a flash, will simply bumping up the f-stop work?

Ok, turn off all unnecessary lights, and get the lights that are lighting the dog away from you, especially not behind you.

Edit: What kind of lights are you using?

...the poor mans light...sunlight :(

i was not standing inbetween the dog and the sunlight, so im guessing there had to be some other sources acting on it. the dog was too lazy to move to the basement where I have more control over lighting.

...guess that makes my situation pretty hopeless...thanks for the help though

in photoshop, you can clone/heal yourself out very easily

...the problem is, there isnt anything neutral for me to clone

i did try to use her eye, however, with the bookshelf, myself, and the windows, i found it too difficult and turned to these forums. I think i see what you did skip, thanks for the help

you're welcome, max. to be more specific, zoom in until you're seeing nothing but eye, then use a 1, 2, or 3 pixel brush to do the cloning. i did what i did in about 20 seconds, just using the eye that's there. if you're working on the full image and spend a bit of time with it, you'll get what you want. good luck!
