I'm buying the 50mm 1.8 - the question I have is whether it's worth the extra to get the Mk I...is it just a prestige thing?

I know about the metal mount, are there any other differences?

What would you choose?

1) New Mk II for $120 CAD
2) Used Mk I (good condition from a trusted seller) for $160 CAD

The MkI is a better built lens, but they are pretty much identical optically.

The MkI has the metal mount, a nicer manual focus ring and 'feel' and a distance scale..

MkII is, as I understand it, the same optics in a cheaper body. All plastic construction and an annoyingly small manual focus ring.. It feels like a toy, but still takes great photos.. It' the best bang for buck of any canon lens by a long shot.

If you're not worried about the distance scale, and you don't swap lenses like crazy the Mk II will be fine. The Mk I will take a bit more abuse and feels nicer to use.

I borrowed a MkI while waiting for my MkII to arrive, and if I see a second hand one come up at a good price here I'll grab it, but the difference wasn't big enough to make me run out and get one at any price..

Cheers, Chris H.

Thanks a lot Chris, I think I'm leaning to spending the extra bit on the Mk I...I do want this thing to last. The only thing is, it's already 15 years old...I guess that doesn't matter too much, does it?

one extra bump to collect more opinions on the original post...

If you haven't seen it already, this is a great site to visit for "laymans" review of photographic equipment:

//www.photographyreview.com/

It's pretty useful. Just type the proper name of the lens (canon 50mm mark II) or even the identifying features (canon 50mm 1.8) and you'll get a list of reviews.
