This building struck my eye as I was driving by it. I thought I may be able to portray a gloomy mood to the place. It seems like it may have partially caught fire at one point. I'm thinking about submitting a composite of all of these to a juried photo competition. What do you guys think?
I have the composite hosted on my website because the dimensions are a bit bigger than DPC allows :)
Composite
Thanks :D

I really like all of these. I like the soft fell and the lighting and the composition. The only one that I am not sure about is the door. I almost want to see more of it in the photo. Not sure if that was possible. My two fav's are the second and third. Good job

Thanks, Puma. I used a photoshop action from //www.atncentral.com/ called "Gothic Glow." You can see the original files here: Originals
It's not something I normally do, but I really like the results. I've only got one picture of that door but I've got a couple days before I need to order the prints...so I can reshoot. Should I?

Sparkly, I think the second one is great. I added it to my favourites. The colours and composition are really powerful. |

Thank you very much, enigmania :)
I'm starting to feel guilty, however. This will (possibly) be in an art gallery of original, unique works. Sure, I took the pictures and did more editing that just the Gothic Glow action, but the action significantly changed what the photos looked like. Can I justify submitting these?

I'm considering the same question here in relation to a local contest. I think only the contest organisers can answer that question. :) |

These are quite lovely. I don't think the door fits with the others, though. It's a whole other sort of feeling.
Why one arth wouldn't these be acceptable as "original, unique" works? Unless there's something in the competition rules similar to our basic editing guidelines? Typically, there wouldn't be... You're making art here, man, not photojournalism...

Wonderful eye for composition in all of these shots, in my opinion. I do like this sort of effect and I think it works here with the tones and mood of the shots. I agree about the door. It feels a little more, um...maybe "urban" - a bit more harsh than the other shots. I think it's a good shot in it's own right, though. Maybe it will just help set off the other set of photos. Trust your instincts because it looks to me like you're doing just fine!
Good luck with the competition! |

I decided to scrap the gothic glow effect and do some editing without the use of actions. I also went back and reshot.
Do you guys think this is an improvement?
