Thank you. As a PJ I shoot these things and they are very depressing and are the worst part of the job. It dosn't make you uncaring or unfeeling, but as you said, we have a job to do, "tell the story with pictures." Luckily these kind of pics comprise maybe 10-15% of what I have to shoot, the rest being sports and feature items. Thats why I can do the job, because if it were all I ever shot I wouldn't be able to deal with it.

I am not "putting down" photojournalists.
Am I putting down vultures for waiting for a rat to die in the desert?
Am I putting down a tiger for its natural instinct to kill?
I am just saying, that not all photojournalists have to stay "in character" at all times, at the expense of lives and feelings and tact-not always. The Lower Booth Falls Minnesota (or random one horse town)gazette does not need a shot in the paper at the expense of life and limb. all for what? money? All I said was that it has the negative side effect of giving all photographers a bad name SOMETIMES. Let me say that I am all for 1st amendment rights.

Its not about having the balls or stomach to be a PJ- It about facing up to what you are, and that people may get emotional with you if
when you assume a role as visible parasite.

Wow, those are strong words...I don't say that as an indictment at all. Those are truly strong words, as you intended them to be.

I had never thought of photojournalists as a visible parasite. I have come at it from the angle that they are there to share with the world what they see.

This is an honest question: Do you think that a photojournalist can do his/her job in a manner that is noble (rather than parasitic)?

Great Article,
Almost the same happened to me sunday while driving. I saw an accident that had just happened where a motorcyclist had crashed into a bus. I thought about taking pictures for the Pain challenge but thought it might be a little crude as the man was lying dead on the sidewalk and only the bus driver and two other people were there. I passed on the chance and dont feel bad about it. Some other challenge will be my 1st then.
