I am no expert Jeremy but I like your different approach here.
I would be proud of both.

The first one is a bit harsh on the left, and the resulting shadow on the right side of the nose is a bit distracting. Try using a softbox and a little closer to the camera (not so off to the side). Interesting angle, the bottom corners would be better black.

The second one is so-so. Lighting again is harsh on the face, but not so bad, especially for what you're goin' for. The lit rug or whatever that is behind her is distracting, I'd go for a dark background, and not so much contrast, much dark detail is lost.

Hope that helps. Pretty model, good natural expressions. Keep it up!

Well, you got someone to pose for you, so you've already got the hardest part licked. :)

Amen!

Someone that doesn't complain about how unphotogenic they are!

The first one is awesome. Its got the most character I've seen in a portrait for a long time. Beautiful Work.

agreed - the first one is quite nice.
has a emotion, and character.

i'm no expert, but you asked, so i'll throw in my opinion:
one of the more important parts of a portrait is the eyes ... that connection the viewer has with the model. both your shots are good, but in both of them one of her eyes is only partially visible (obstructed or in shadow). i think the "rule" is to either show the entire eye, or none of it at all ... and i think it's a rule worth following ... i think it would have strengthened both of these shots ... keep 'em coming, nice job.

They are both very nice, and have a good feeling. Just for critiques sake, I think that both of them, the second one imparticular, look a bit overprocessed. That is one big thing to learn is the processing of portraits. A lot of time, besides touching up obvious blemishes and such, a little tweaking goes a long way. I really like your poses, and dramatic lighting. Keep shoootin!

The second one is too overprocessed for me, but I really like the first one. The lighting is very well done. In that picture in particular (1st), you might consider having her take off the rings.

Great work...you are really growing as a photographer!

I agree, another tip. Don't break the plane of the cheek with eyes or the nose. Keep both within the fram of the face. Not that you broke that law this time:)

I would like to thank everyone for the great things you are saying about the 2 portraits. They make me feel all warm and fuzzy! LoL

It was alot of fun modeling for Jeremy and he is really coming along as a photographer (I am TRYING to share my knowledge with him.) I am very proud of him! He even took these without me posing... I am hard to take photos of, I tend to be too un-natural. And he caught me just at the right moment! :)

Thanks again everyone and way to go Jer!
