I was about to enter a version of a photo in the Old and New challenge when I realized that the challenge was for Basic Editing. As it was at the last minute, I had to enter a different version, since the one I wanted to enter had used techniques that weren't legal under the Basic rules. How could I accomplish the effect that I wanted under Basic rules? The first is the one I entered (admittedly not very good) and the second is the one I wanted to enter (not much better).

Could you have found one of the gold Miller cans and played up their similarities in the framing and then de-sated everything but the blue and cyan channels? This is legal and would have given a similar effect.

If the crushed can didn't have the same colors as the non crushed one, you could've just desaturated the colors.

The tutorial under the Learn menu has more detail, but basically (no pun intended) the desaturation must be done by color selection instead of selecting by color. That is, in your example, if you have used a crumpled red can, you could have desaturated just the reds and ended up with close to the same -- although it would have given you fits with the red in the blue can. As I said, the tutorial goes into much greater detail.
