My 2c would be to get a translucent/white brolly, and shoot-through it..
Shot with a 36" white brolly, shot through with the 580ex. (Cabled, not st-e2, but you get the idea..)
Bounced of a white brolly you lose quite a bit of light, and silver brollys give you a 'mottled' effect on larger areas...
Shooting through a white brolly is, IMHO, the best bang for buck if you're on a budget. Good for portraits, product shots, and still life, although not so hot for really reflective still life as you'll be able to see the brolly. A soft box is best there...
