I'm going to get the ST-E2 transmitter this week, just wondering how a small softbox or umbrella (reflective or diffuser) would work and any suggestions what to get with a stand. I have the Lumiquest softbox, but not too big on it. It's inevitable that I will get some studio quality strobes... someday, but I just spent almost $500 on this flash and want to get the most out of it for now. Aw shucks, I'm cheap. Thanks.

My 2c would be to get a translucent/white brolly, and shoot-through it..

Shot with a 36" white brolly, shot through with the 580ex. (Cabled, not st-e2, but you get the idea..)

Bounced of a white brolly you lose quite a bit of light, and silver brollys give you a 'mottled' effect on larger areas...

Shooting through a white brolly is, IMHO, the best bang for buck if you're on a budget. Good for portraits, product shots, and still life, although not so hot for really reflective still life as you'll be able to see the brolly. A soft box is best there...

Just my 2c worth. :-)

A nice cheap way to start is an umbrella, a stand, and one of these (this photo is an example, there are other similar makes). It allows you to attach your flash to a stand and umbrella.

Useful even later whe you have studio strobes.
