All that I know is that when I get the money I'm buying a 2 flash set up, and I need them to be off camera. If there's anythig in photography I don't know jack about it's flashes.
I would prefer to fire the flashes wirelessly, but not with optical slaves as they often get fired by the af lamp so I hear.
I'm open to using sync cords I guess, but how do you sync 2 flashes from one camera at the same time?
I know the sb600 and sb800 can be fired wirelessly but they're a lot of money.
I've heard good flashes are vivitar 285, sunpak 544, 555. This is for skateboard photography where I will usually be close up, so range isn't a huge deal. Would like to use it for long lens shots if possible though.
I know I'm asking a lot of questions here but does anyone else have a setup like this, what do you use? if not what would you recommend, and how much am I looking at spending for all of this? (2 flashes and whatever I need to fire them)
Thanks!

Im actually about to get into the same photography, skateboarding, and want off camera flash too. Im gonna get a sigma EF-500 DG super. I found one used for 165. Its ettl2 compatible so I can use it as a regular shoe flash. It also has full manual controls so I can use transmitters of some sort to fire them as well. //cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=30088&item=3870136734&rd=1

same, but I figure I might as well throw in a few extra dollars in case i did ever want that stuff for non skateboarding. Basically, you need to answer this question. Do you want to fire a flash from your camera to set off the others? (optical slave) ORRRRRRRRRRRR do you want to just set off the slaves without shooting a flash from your camera? In that case youre gonna need to wire it, or the radio transmitter I showed you on ebay or something like that.

looks like it comes with one receiver. You would need two to fire two flashes. Somewhere in the description it says contact the seller if you need additional recievers, so i guess id do that. I havent used these or anything, but they look good, and seem to work well from the feedback he gets.

Does this need to be portable? Ie: moving alot for action? If so then having one flash in the hotshoe and another set up however is what you need. And to me it sounds like the SB-800 and a SB-600 would be the to go. They DO NOT fire from other flashes...they have a "commander" flash that trips it. You would need the SB-800 on the camera and the 600 set up away. The 800 commands the 600. There is some info in you D70 manual on it also
this is a link to ALOT of flash reviews.

I too know nothing when it comes to flash photography but I recently got two of the Canon 580ex's and a wireless transmitter and I'm loving them. I know price seems to be an issue but I'm happy that I spent every penny I did... these things are great. I do a lot of snowboarding and skateboarding photos as well and I cant wait to get out and shoot with these flashes. I also have a sunpak 555 and 622 and they are not nearly as user friendly, not even close. I'm not familar with nikon products but I think the SB-800 would be a close comparison. Just my .02
