I've been in a brainstorm meeting going nowhere.
Task: to come up with a picture for a chapter in a company history book called "From jack of all trades to master of one". The picture should either be of "master" or of "jack of all trades".
Please help me with some ideas. |

What does the 'master' create? What were some of the other areas? Knowing this will likely help us help you.

The "master" can create anything or be anything. The picture should be of something outside the industry the book is about. To avoid to narrow your minds I'll not tell you what industry. Not yet anyway. |

If your in T.O. then I know a blacksmith tht also does construction and you could probably come up with a great shot of pounding steel or something.

How about a playing card-like picture showing a jack with all suits - clubs, diamonds, spades and hearts? |

Any skyscrapers under construction right now in Stockholm? An ironworker posed on the end of a high beam jutting into space is a fine illustration of "mastery of a trade"...

Blacksmith is good. Really a master of one trade. However I'm not in T.O. I'll add Blacksmith on my list for next brainstorm meeting. |

There are only two skyscrapers in Stockholm and none under construction. I don't think anyone from the US would call them skyscrapers. :-)
Skyscraper is a good suggestion though. I have used that in another chapter about our first US office.

My first thought (not saying it is a good one but maybe) for jack of all trades is someone multi-tasking. I think of a shot with multi-exposures of someone fixing a computer in one shot, then another with them like fixing a sink, and maybe one working on a totally unrealted item like building a table or something. All items should be unrelated as much as possible to get the distinction of all trades.
For master I would do something like the blacksmith or carpenter or something that takes dedication and dilagence to master that one thing. Have finished projects somehow surrounding but not cluttering them.
Just an idea, hope it helps...good luck |

Maybe another option would be a multi-exposure shot of someone sitting at a workstation with like 6 arms - talking on the phone, writing something down on paper, using a PDA, typing at a keyboard all at the same time. I dunno. It's just a suggestion.

Multi-exposure shots is a good idea. It might not work with the rest of the photos in the book. I'll forward the suggestion to the AD and the graphic designers and see what they say. |

A Swiss Army Knife next to a single wrench or screwdriver. Simple. |

Master: Perhaps an artist (for example, a painter) in the process of creating a Masterpiece. |

That sounds good. Then wait around to see if one falls and he could be the "master of none"!

Did you ever find an idea for your photo? If not, go track one of the IT guys/gals down in your building/Company.
If anything like what I have to do you will find your Jack of all Trades, master of none. A lot of us do Network, Email, Anit-virus, Security, Desktop, field support, Server Farm, Moves Adds and Changes to the Phone Switch, Printers and Faxes, Shipping and Receiving, Facilities and on and on...And then they would like you to write all the policies and procedures for the above...

My list so far:
Professions: Blacksmith, ironworker, IT guys/gals, fisherman
multi-exposures
Swiss Army Knife
artist
painter
Masterpiece
a jack with all suits
Keep posting I really appreciate your efforts. |

Many hats next to a construction helmet.
Duct tape compared to teflon tape.
Michael Jordan: Baseball, Golf, Badminton... vs. Basketball
Cellphone/camera/MP3/PDA vs. standard telephone
Tennis shoe vs. Cleats
...(I still like the Swiss Army Knife approach)
Brainstorming R Us. ;-)

This is by far the best suggestion in my opinion, as long as the single wrench looks like a high-end, heavy duty, or premium tool.
