I just got a new Nikon D70, and am now wondering if I need to get different software also. I have been using PhotoImpactPro 8.5, and to be honest am still learning how to use everything. Since I am a college student I can get PS for about $250. What would be the advantage of getting the PS, if any? |

I know nothing about PhotoImpact, but I used to use Paint Shop Pro.
It's a fantastic program which does nearly everything that photoshop can do, but I eventually caved in and switched to photoshop.
The reason for the change was the sheer volume of advice, tutorials, examples etc etc etc that you can find for photoshop, but not any others.
However if you're perfectly happy with what you have - why spend the money on software? |

If you can get PS at student pricing, get that. There are far more tutorials and learning materials for PS then anything else and is industry standard. PhotoImpact has alot of the same features but names them differently such as Feather in PS becomes Soften in PhotoImpact. This will add to confusion if you are trying to learn from a PhotoShop book or tutorial.
Just my opinion.

If you can afford PS, get it now while you're a student. It's upgradeable, and there's no substitute for the HUGE volume of information, plugins, tutorials, and other goodies out there for this program. Sooner or later you're going to want to have it if you're serious about digital photography.

PhotoImpact is a very underated program. I would keep using it as a training tool before you invest into PS. |

Photoshop is the industry standard. It's a must have skill in the field of digital photography. Nobody is going to ask you how good your PhotoImpact Pro is or your Paint Shop Pro is.
If funds are not an issue, I would advice to go with Photoshop. |

I've been using Photoshop since I had my 80486 SX - 33MHz ( thats a very old computer for those of you who dont know-way before the pentiums came in).
Those days I wasnt using 95% of the programs capabilities - but it was very powerfull program. And it still is.
Now I use it all the time for my photographs.
Its easy to learn- nothing to it.
So many tutorials on the web.
Its been there since the begining of digital imaging - and it will be there for a very very long time to come.
BUT if you want to do some simple image editing at the end of the day I guess PhotoImapct will do the job.
I havent used PhotoImpact - but if it serves the purpose why waste money on something you already have.
get used to PhotoImapct and then if you feel the need to upgrade later- do so.
Cheers

I have to agree with kaush - there is nothing better than Photoshop. It's not even a debatable question. However, if you don't need all of that power, then you might chose to go with a lighter (cheaper) application. Google offers a free software called Picasa that will do basic editing and cropping as well as filtering and more. Check it out. If it does what you need, perfect! It was free! If you need the capabilities of Photoshop, then buy it. :) |

Photoshop is the industry standard. It will be around forever. Learn it now or learn it later. Either way if you are going to get involved in serious photo editing sooner or later you will have to aquire a copy.

BTW I have downloaded the demo of PhotoImpact 10 and it seems like a real memory hog. It seems to slow down quite a bit and I have an awesome machine with tons of memory. I want to like PI as I don't have the funds for PS and am too old to pass for Student. I try it at the movies all the time with no luck. |

I just noticed your are shooting with a D70 which means that PS CS can be invaluable with its capability of allowing you ajustments to the raw image such as exposure and vignetting. You have to try it to apreciate it.

It is against the law in the US for Adobe or any other software manufaturer to collect information from a minor. In other words if you buy the Student version, when you go to activate they will inform you that if you are a minor you needn't fill out the student verification. If you don't fill out the student verification how are they going to know how old you are? Get it?

Reputable dealers in student price adobe products require proof of student status, not proof of age. You can enroll in a community college in your area, get a student ID, and buy the software legally with that. Age has nada to do with it.
Unless they've stopped asking for ID? They asked 3 years ago when my neighbor (54 years old) bought a student version.
