A question from a less experienced guy:

What's the difference between the Nikon 70-300 zooms, the f4.5-6d ED and the f4.5-6 G, and wicth one shold work better with the D70, and what do you think about it?

And the Sigma 70-300 APO super macro II, is it a serious option in your oppinion?

Any of them will work on the D70. The ED has better optics, and as a result makes better pictures. As an example and Were both taken with the 300 ED.

I've outgrown my 70-300 for one simple reason- it's too slow. I lost shots that I need to get while the focus is locking in, or I lose shots due to lack of clarity. It's also taken me 6 years to get to that point. So I think the ED is a great beginning lens option. It works well, has good construction, and should resale at a decent price for me.

I've used the Sigma, but I have to confess- I'm a Nikon snob. I just like their lenses.

What are you planning on using it for?

The quality of the glass and the quality of the construction is higher in the ED version.

I have no clue about the sigma. I only mount Nikon lenses, and never really was that big a fan of Sigma, outside of their 50MM.

I have the 70 -300MM F/4 -5.6 ED, and was thinking of selling it and going to the 70-200MM f/2.8 AF-S VR. I find I don't really need or use the 200MM+ range. In the field I find I need a lower F-stop, more than I need the extra 100MM. Fast focusing and a fast aperture are more important than 200MM-300MM.

the 70-300 G and 70-300 ED are similar lenses I think but the build quality is better in the ED lens I think (so it is stronger) and ED means better glass in the lens. The ED version is mor expensive but I think it is still rather cheap if you consider 70-200MM F 2.8 lens or similar.

About half year ago I was thinking about that 70-300mm ED lens but diceded to buy more expensive 80-200 mm F2.8 which is much faster than the 70-300.
