Check p.150 of the D70 manual. It will give you an idea of wireless flash photography. Your camera's built in flash can be set as a commander. |

right I understand that, but I don't understand what that means. I am very new to the idea of flash because for the past three years I have been a pureist. but now that I'm in school and learning how to do it the right way I really would like to try it

I don't think there's a right and a wrong way unless you are breaking it.
From your initial post I understood that you wanted to have the flash off camera. I think how you can do that would depend on the make/model of the flash too. If you have a SB-600 or SB-800 you can use the flash off camera without wires (not sure about other models).
I use D70 with SB-800, and off camera pretty often.
You have go to the settings in your camera and set the flash as a commander. Then set the flash as a remote. What it means is that the flash will be listening to wireless signals. When you press the shutter button, the camera will send information with settings to the flash. The flash takes the information and fires. Built in flash doesn't interfere with lighting or exposure. I think the only 2 speedlights fully compatible with D70 are the SB-600 & SB-800. You can take full adnavtage of i-TTL with these flashes.
