... As for the rest of the discussion, I have to say that I come down on gordon's side on this one. After joining in December, I've entered six challenges (including the 2 current) and have not received one comment after voting has ended (oops, just checked and one person just did on Friday). My scores have ranged between the mid-fours to the high fives which says to me that maybe I have some potential, but still have a lot to learn (that second part I'm keenly aware of). I've not PM'd anyone regarding my comments until the "Threes" challenge because I'd read in previous threads that some people really didn't like that. And once a challenge is over, it seems that everyone (myself included) is ready to move on to the next. ...

I hope we are not going to deteriorate into taking sides, but just to keep the discussion focused-- we are talking about replies to comments made during voting where the reply comes before voting is over. Revealing the identity of the photographer to the commenter while they can still go back and change the vote is considered as undermining annonymity, and can be used as a method of cheating.

Replying to comments made during or after voting when there is no longer an opportunity to change votes is heartily encouraged by all of us.

The "spirit of the rules" as we have enforced them is to respect the wishes of users who wish to submit or vote under conditions of anonymity, but not to categorically prohibit any activity which might breach anonymity. For example, we prohibit discussion of individual challenge entries during voting, but allow photographers to post their challenge entries on other sites (so long as they do not use those posts to "campaign" for their entries). To that end, we put in the "opt-out" feature which will hide commenters' names if either the commenter or photographer request that. ...

Don't you think that people can take a position of discouraging the undesirable activities without having to enforce categorical prohibitions?

That the challenges are designed to be anonymous is evident by the fact that voters don't know who's photo they are voting on. The rules state in bold type "Any attempts to alter the point totals in any way for any photograph will result in immediate loss of account and a ban from the site."

Replying during voting could be stopped by changed coding and would require none of the "grey area" enforcement that is so difficult and controversial. But there might be an increase in abusive comments that would need to be dealt with.

A prohibition of posting on other sites could be very difficult to enforce, but that might be easier than making a lot of those "grey area" decisions about what constitutes campaigning.

Terry, don't you think the Site Council, and the community as a whole, could take the view that these activities that can be used to alter scores are not good for the site and should be discouraged when they arise in forum discussions?

Well, I guess that I broke the rules, then. My point, though, is that it would be nice to be able to discuss challenge entries while they are fresh. While my intentions would not be to influence the voting, I can see how some might abuse that. But if one of the primary objectives of the site is to allow photographers to improve, discussion can only help with that.

Ultimately, coolhar, I think we probably net out in pretty much the same place on this discussion, so sorry if my previous post made it sound otherwise. I guess I'd just like to find some way to discuss my entries without violating the spirit of the anonymity of the challenge.

Just came back to this thread and this is too funny. "Coolhar", if you wish to debate this issue, please PM me. Ooops! Did I say that?
