Iam farley new to this board I've have searched but wasnt able to find andthing on this topic. My girlfriend took a picture of my son and i guess the lens was dirty or something and the bottom right corner of the picture is out of focus. I really like this picture and Iam convinced there is a way to fix it however i dont have Photoshop but i have a good image editting program. Iam not really looking to invest in any of those focus programs out there since they are only plugins and not compatible with my software any one out there have any ideas please tell me. Thank you so much I wish there was a way i could show this picture but i cant figure out how.

If the software you have will let you do apply some sharpening on a feathered selection, you may be able to improve it somewhat, but don't look for a miracle. You can't create detail out of nothing, so any improvement will be subtle.
Select the area that's a problem, feather the selection by at least 10-20 pixels, and then apply sharpening only on the selection. Do so gently, over-sharpened areas can look ugly.

I see no need for sharpening that area; the whole pic is appealingly soft-focus anyway. Instead, do some judicious cropping to enhance the image.

I will try both ideas thank you however being that the picture is only maybe 1 million pixels if i crop it come out a little grainy i wonder.....

Leon,

Here's a quick-and-dirty fix on it, still not good for printing to any size though. It would help a lot if I had the largest possible version of this image. If this is it, it could be improved more with more careful work. It's not impossible. Artifical-looking at one level, yes, but appealing nonetheless as an image of your child.

excellent very nice iam highly impressed with the background iam using this program i heard about some where on here called gimp. how can i change the background like that?

Leon,

This was done with photoshop, GIMP has similar processes but different names for some of them.

I used the "magnetic lasso" to draw a selection around the child. I magnified the image and went in and added/subtracted on that selection to clean up the edges. I "feathered" the selection to 4 pixels so that it would not stand out too harshly.

Next I inverted the selection, so everything-but-the-child was selected. On this inverted selection I used "gaussian blur" to blur the background to gauzy eveness. Then I used "hue/saturation" to change the color of the blurred background.

Then I reloaded the selection on the child (I had saved the selection as soon as I finished it) and used hue/saturation to clean up the colors on him. Finally, I used a filter plugin called "supersmooth" (similar to neat image) to smooth out the tones slightly on the child.

Hope this helps.

Neat soon i will repost a new picture following the steps you prescribed also i will give focus magic a shot i am not really sure if it will work since i cant use the plug in hopefully it works by its self the only thing i might find difficult is using lasso around his hair because of the trickiness between his hair and the shadow it produces

Once again iam look for DPC's help on a blurry image Iam really inclined to beleive it can be saved i hate to throw away a possible salvaged image possibly by a plugin? i dont know but it was nearly a month ago since i started this tread so maybe now someone has some new advice on fixing a out of focus/ blurry image sharpening and unsharp mask have seem to make a picture look pixelated or a little to sharp where it actually changes the quality of the picture to something nasty looking correct me if iam wrong i jus wondered if there were any new opinions since the last post thanks...

I have focusmagic. It works amazingly well on motion blurred images (subject moving, or camera). At least some times.

Theres a trial--you can download and work on 5 images.

I posted some examples a while back:
Heres the thread--look at the pics of the boy in yellow.

Try it again works now i think but it isnt jus that picture its a couple of new ones i havent actually put up yet i wish i would have but what would you do if you had a blurry picture?

It could be a fun thread to set up (unless there is one already?) to dump shots that you either want fixed or just to have some fun with?

Has it been done here before?
It could turn out to be quite a editing contest, with purpose!

I like it for what it is. It has sentimental value to you...does it really matter if it's perfectly sharp and lighting is perfect? If it does, I'd shoot some more...otherwise, leave it as it is.

Deapee- yea your right it pretty ok as is but in the bottom right corner its jus a little fuzzy but a important thing bear_music pointed out is that it is a low resolution image (0.3MPX) i gotta get some more pictures up on there tommorrow at work since thats where they are so some real experimenting can be done.

Rossco- not a bad idea at all i totally agree
