Plexiglass is an old proper name, and is used for the general catagory in the same way that xerox has come to mean photocopy. The general name for the stuff you want is polycarbonate, and some of the brand names are Lexan and Lucite. It comes in 3'x 6' sheets for about $50.00 and cuts and sands with wood working tools. It is prone to scratching and will chip and deveop running cracks if you try to cut too fast. hope that helps.
