Hello DP-ers,

This site looks pretty wonderful.

I'm a newbie picture taker (With a D70 for Christmas!) I would love to buy many lenses for it. However being of limited resources, I'm considering a wide angle lense and I've seen a 17-35 f/2.8D for sale for a semi-reasonable price. I'm assuming that it would work with my camera. Is it a good idea to buy a lense used? How easy is it to check out that it is okay? Are there good places to buy good used equipment.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

J.

Welcome! Yes that lens will work on your D70, and it's a very highly regarded lens. One of the best, if not the best, super-wide angle zoom of any brand. I'm sure you're aware that with the D70 you must mulitply the stated focal length by 1.5 to get the effective focal length as it will be on your D70 due to the crop caused by the smaller sensor. It will act like a ~25-52mm lens on your camera.

Used lenses are a tough one. The major problems with used lenses (that are visible) are dust on the interior glass surfaces, fungus or mold (usually only seen on older lenses improperly stored in humid conditions), and scratches. One or two small scratches or a few tiny particles of dust aren't likely to affect image quality too much, but they do devalue the lens and should be taken into account.

Reputable, large-volume online dealers like Adorama and B&H have used sections with detailed rating and description fields in their databases. They're trustworthy. I usually feel safe buying from someone on eBay who does very large volumes and has good feedback, but I'd be careful with buying from individuals unseen. Good lenses don't depreciate all that much, so the savings you'll get by buying used sometimes aren't worth the bother. Buying new gives you the peace of mind that if it's not perfect, it has a warranty.

//www.adorama.com and //www.bhphoto-video.com are good places for new and used gear. I've bought stuff from both and have been treated very well.

Thank you Mr. Fish!

Those sites are really great leads.

Luckily or not, the lense has been sold. Sigh! But I'm sure that lense are like buses. There will be another one soon.

And thank you for the reminder about the focal length calculation.

Regards,
DSB

divasurfbird,

The Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8 is a first rate lens. Below are a few photos taken with it on a D70.

This is a true professional lens. Very highly rated for photojournalism. As jimmythefish mentioned, B&H used is a solid place for used equipment. I am in agreement with jimmythefish's post. Very sound advice IMO.

KEH.com is a great resource for used lenses. From what I have experienced and what I have heard from others, their condition ratings are pretty much right on. You can get from brand new to dinged up bargain lenses.

I highly recommend them.
