i came across this, this afternoon.
this is a PDF with a channels duplicating method of BW conversion.
at the end there is a link to a page you can download an action to automate the dupliucating process, and set up the layers for you.
it says it works only with PSCS - but i ran it on PS6, and it seemed to work fine.
not sure any one else has come across this or not.

i'll bring it back up - as i found it a well put together tutorial.
you have to read the image captions.
