Kind of an outake but not really since I'm not a member. Here's my story: I'm not a member because I'm wayyyy too young to own a credit card that does paying through the internet and right now my parents don't have the time to buy me one (Though I am counting for a membership in the future). And you know, ever since the Faceless challenge has been suggested, ideas have been flying around in my mind. It was such a desapointment when Faceless ended up being a member's challenge.

But I loved the idea and I still shot it like I was going to enter the challenge. Though this was not the best and most original idea I had, since I didn't have the time to concentrate on such a project (Didn't really need to rush since I wasn't going to enter the challenge anyway)this is another idea.

I would love to hear how do you think it would have done in the challenge?

It's a nice idea, but I don't understand the pictures message. Do you want to say that time erases the memory of individuals? Or is there not intended to be any message?
I'm surprised to see that wa have so many young talents on this site.

Well it was more open to all the ideas but I did have a message behind it. The thing is there is a daily activity behind it, it's praying and the clock was just symbolising old times. So maybe reflecting on the fact that religion has not evolved throughout the years. But yeah, the message is kind of complicated and not really put well into the picture, I just wanted it to fit the challenge; I'm planning on improoving this message later.

Ennil, I was going to give you a little critique on your photo, but first went to your profile to learn a little more about you.

To my great shock I saw that your average vote cast is 2.86 !!!!!!

Since you obviously think we are all quite useless, I better not dare comment on one of YOUR photos.

I would like to suggest you rethink the concepts involved in voting on photos.

I actually call that luck.

Don't get me wrong, I did vote really high on some of the pictures that I liked and they mostly end up in high places but every challenge I end up with the not-so-great-pictures. But I decided about two days ago, that either I will not vote on the not-so-great-pictures or will force myself to leave long comments.

Since you obviously think we are all quite useless, I better not dare comment on one of YOUR photos.

You have to be kidding me. How do you know what I have voted for?

And? I said two days ago, I didn't even vote till then.

Wow, I really am getting the answers to my question.

Wow, you must really not like a lot of photos to have an average of 2.8667... I question how you vote, do you go around giving every picture you classify as not-so-great a 1 and 2?
01/25/2005 04:06:41 PM · #9
Oh geeze. No seriously am I supposed to give out free 10 to every image that looks like it was taking with a webcam through the window of a moving car? yeah those are the images I only vote 1. I would never vote a 1 to a picture that has potential. And yes I do know that I should have at least commented on those pictures.

Anyone else want to comment on my voting style?

Well.... with an average vote of 2.8667... that means you are giving alot of pictures low scores... do you only vote on the photos you don't like? or are you just giving every photo bad scores??? I think thats what people are asking. a few high votes should raise that average.. ya know?

Since you asked..... Yes...

I can see that with the attitude you are currently displaying that you will be an instant hit with the "plebs" on this site.

The sad fact is that you have entered 4 challenges, received an average of 5.38 from the voters, and reciprocated by "generously" doling out scores that averaged a mere 2.86.

In essence, simple math would tend to suggest that the photos you voted on were only about half as good as yours.

Perhaps now you can understand why some people might feel a bit reluctant to provide you with assistance... Perhaps it might be due to the fact that..... well, they fear they might not meet your standards.

Thanx Ray, and though I'm trying to stay clear of the attitude but it's kind of hard, am I starting to sound spoiled? If so I'll shut up. I'm mostly new and the moment I hit 20% mark, I stop voting, that might be why I never get to see some of the magnificent pics found in the top 100s, I always look at all the pictures when the challenge has ended and always wind up wondering why I have never voted on the pics that have won a ribbon.

The weird thing is, I either have never seen and never voted any pictures of the people who have commented here or like for exemple Beetle and nico-blue am fans of their work.

Ennil,

I don't think there's anything wrong with your voting average/scheme, and shouldn't have to answer nor explain to anyone what your aesthetic preferences are. I vote on what I like and don't like, and cast my votes accordingly -- based on my standards, not on the standards of what the a group thinks. Simply put, keep on voting based on your sense of aesthetics, and don't feel compelled to justify your votes. Moreover, am frankly amazed that anyone would even expect an explanation of what is clearly subjective, one's voting.

As for your image, I like the lighting, color tone, processing -- it's a strong image. As to how it would've done in the challenge, I think it would've scored relatively well; however, based on my interpretation of the challenge, it does not meet this requirement: "human beings engaged in normal human activity." Your image, to me, does not clearly represent a "normal human activity." Nonetheless, I would've scored it above average.

I would have to say yes also, but you also seem to be asking some genuine questions and trying to think this through. I really respect that. I had an average-vote-given in the 4's when I first came here. I really re-vamped my whole thought process and now that average is in medium fives for me. Higher than my own score, and I find myself giving more and more higher scores for those images that just sing for me. My tastes are very personal and I want to show the appreciation I feel seeing the ones that speak to me. I don't think I have given out anything lower than 4 for a long time. I hope you continue to ask questions, take some blunt answers and hang in here and enjoy DPC.

I dont know if I should get involved in this subject or not, but I thought I would share my voting style and see if maybe something like this would work for you, Ennil.
I give everyone the benifit of the doubt...If it meets the challenge I start voting at a 6. A rather bad photo, but if it meets the challenge it gets a 6. From there on I vote up. There is occations, and we have all seen them, where a photo is just awful and doesnt meet the challenge at all. Then I may give a 4 or a 5. And when a photo is barely even viewable at all, yes, a 2 or a 3.
Maybe you should set your own starting vote. It really helps me.
