If you have biggish hands and tend to shoot with heavy lenses, you will love the grip, but do try before you by. If your hands don't fit it, it won't work for you.

Is there any reason you are only concidering the two Canon flashes? I use the sigma ef-500 dg super. It has most of the 550's feature set, but a looser and equally bulky build. Since I could buy two for the price of the 550 I went that route. I know others who like the high end of the Vivitar line, and some who swear the only reason they use a Canon is their love of the 550. You might end up back at Canon, but check out the competition before you buy. I have come to love my Sigmas more since I dropped one on a slab and blew out the circutry, killed it dead, sent it in to Sigma in NY and got it back in a month no questions, no charge.

i love the grip....makes it convenient to hold. sometimes i can use my left hand positioned underneath...kinda like shooting a gun...and i can push the shutter button with the thirs finger of my left hand. Seems to make things more steady. Just my thought.....plus it LOOKS REALLY COOL. I think with it installed...chicks dont even care that I am short, fat and bald.

In order to get flash exposure compensation, yes. The 550 has it on board. So does the Sigma 500 DG Super, which costs about as much as the 420 but has features that the Canon 550 has.

This sounds like it would be pretty reasonable! I'm going to go and research it....do you have this one? What do you think of it?

I have this and rather like it, but have never used one of the Canon ones. The only real negative that I can think of is that the flash unit drops out of high speed synch if your shutter speed goes below 1/200, which can be a bit of a pain in Av mode.

I love my grip on my 300D. Also have a grip on my 20D. Buy it you'll like it!
