A little disappointed with my scoring thus far .... although I can't see the individual scores, is there a way to do this? I can only see comments and a total number of views/scores and an avg. thus far. Average thus far is a 4.70.
I am getting whacked it seems on my soft focus that was intentional for the mood of the shot that I was trying to get, but I think most thought that it just seems out of focus ... which I suppose I can understand. Is soft focusing really not well liked in general or do most prefer to see diffusion filters used instead of soft focal.
I wasn't expecting a great score but for my first entry, I thought it would score a bit higher.
Thoughts?
Thanks

You can't see the breakdown of scores till after it ends.
I actually scored a 4.702 on my first challenge too.
Don't worry, its not a bad score and you will learn a lot as you continue to enter. :)

Are you allowed to mention which post is mine before judging ends? |

No. Your submission should be anonymous during the voting process. |

4.2 on my first challenge! I've only submitted to 11 challenges but hope to be more prolific this year!

As you learn the voting styles here, there are certain things that will come to the forefront. Right up there on top is that most people don't take the time to really look at an image. If your image is not perceived as sharp, whatever the reasons, intentional, your use of DOF, someone elses bad monitor, shooting in rain, smoke or fog, whatever - it will get lower votes the vast majority of the time. There are those who get it, but they are the ones who take more than 5 seconds to figure it out. In my opinion, here at DPC, if you have one photo that is technically great, but not emotive -vs- one that is emotively great, but not a technically strong, the technically better one will win the majority of the time. Why? it's easier to snap judge and move on.
My opinions anyway.
Bill

Sort of like mom walking through the mall looking for a print and she has 400 other things to do so she leafs through the art fairly briskly.. to me.. it's a great training ground in marketing to impulse shoppers.. now .. if your appeal is for a more demanding audience, then the blitzkrieg of challenges will make that style of photography hard to score high. In my not so veteran view here.

Thanks for the input .... I don't have any trouble with it really, and as you say, it is insight into what really is behind marketing. I still thought the composition would carry it just a bit farther but it was/is a great experience either way. I am sure what sells in a challenge is just as significant in time and effort as is the technique and variables of the shot itself.
Thanks

there are some (alot i dunno) people here who just don't *get* emotive photography.
You really have 2 choices, to play for the crowd, or to play for yourself... some people don't *get* techincally sound photos either come to think of it... |
