I was thinking that at the end of each year we could have a contest of all the winning photos to select the best photo of the year. It could be done similarly to our existing challenges.
Another Idea would be to have catagory best picture of the year. For instance Best Nature photo or best portrait etc. etc. Since we catagorize our pictures anyway when we submit them we could use this information to catagorize the pictures. What do you all think? |

Digging this post up because i was about to suggest something similar. During the last week in December, perhaps ALL the blue ribbon winners for the year could be voted on for Best Photo of the year. Just one, No place, No show, no wacky categories, just one photo that the most people agree is the best of the best.
Now, some may say that it isn't fair because each picture concentrated on a different challenge, but a good picture is a good picture, and aside from Favorites, which people can pick multiple items for, there's no other way to assess people's preference among the winners. And it gives people who did not vote on some of the challenges a chance to look over the entire year's top pics and judge them. Favorites are a way of determining who makes the pictures that most people like, but it also includes non-ribbon pics and non-challenge pics. Picture rating doesn't help, because a 7.574 rated winner in the Everyday Items challenge might not measure up, picturewise, to the 6.870 rated winner in the Habits challenge.
The only thing that would unduly influence voting is that we know who the artists are. But hopefully the percentage of people voting just to help their friends will be small. |

I think this would be a great idea if it was an open vote. That way many people would be more unbiased (not as familiar with many of the members and their photos) and it would allow us to compare winning open shots to winning member shots, and see how the coin falls :) |

Oh, I would love for it to be an open vote. I think everyone interested in photography, member or not, deserves a vote for the Best of the Best.
Just a simple ballot, choose one, check "Yes", and you have a week to change your mind. |

Anonymity is a big problem when voting on past challenge entries. |

I'm not sure I like it - my favorite thing about DPC is that the nature and rules of the challenges means that, as a photographer, you are always out there taking new shots and, presumably, learning new things.
A "best picture" contest goes against this in two ways - rehashing past photos and photographically passive. I'd rather be taking and looking at new photos, and having the time, energy, and insight of DPC members focused on votes & comments for those new photos.
Besides, I'm sure we all have our own private feelings of what the best pictures are - and we can already tag them via the "favorites" option. |
