I would like to take pictures for people. I am such an amatuer. Can I market myself as a cheap alternative? I would like to take photos of people, charge them close to nothing, so that I get more practice. Do you think this is a bad thing to do? Should I have business cards?

Also, do you know where I can find a contract for models to release the photos I take of them?

Thank you

If there's another hobby you're knowledgable about, go to events and take photos, offering people a free print (4x5) if they allow you to take photos. If they like what you do, they'll want larger prints and show them to others. Get to know people on a name basis.

People who build / restore cars love to have someone take photos - it shows they did a nice job. They also want photos to show around, and hang in their den. Same with horse owners, show dogs, cats, model builders (esp. if you can do the models in a setting and make them look more 'real'), railroaders, artists, quilters (getting tired yet?)

Approach them as a photographer who likes their works and just wants to record the lovely (fill in the blank). Then they'll approach you, ready to spend money for your work.

Have you done FREE stuff for practice yet? Best to start with that.

I have done a lot of free work and people want to pay me for it and I say no. Then people tell me I am crazy that I should ask or take something. I have done mostly photographs of people and/or their pets. I also now have someone asking me for stock photograpy for their website.

well then yea, you should start charging. If you're not entirely comfortable with it yet, start by charging enough to cover expenses plus 15%. :-)
