I'm just curious how others would crop this photo. Which do you prefer?

Really depends on the usage of the photo. Both use rules of third.

I like the 2nd one best, it's just a little different perspective, guess that's the right word |

Is reshooting an option? :P
The portrait crop is a little busy and I'd probably crop down past the tree trunk, although it's mostly the branches right behind or near the head that is the worse.
I prefer the landscape crop the most because it is a little less busy but again it's mostly the branches behind and near the head. You could try cloning them out but that may be more effort than it's worth.
Another difference between the two is that the portrait crop has him looking into the negative space whereas the landscape crop has him looking out of the frame. Two very opposing moods. What message you want to send will also influence which of the two shots you prefer. |

Beautiful photo!! I love the first one, it just feels more natural to have the eyes looking into the photo rather than out of it. |

Is there any possibility of something in between the two? I like the second, except that the negative space below is a little heavy for me. BTW - excellent photo!!!!

Yeah, I agree that the photo is busy with all the branches. I took quite a few shots, but this was the best one. I like the first one myself for the same reason as Beetle. |

I agree. The first one has more background interest in it as well. A shallower DOF would be even better.

Unfortunately, I was using the Canon 28-135, so that's about all I could do for DOF. I just ordered the 70-200 f4 and 100 f2.8 macro, so I'm looking forward to taking more pictures with shallow depth of field. |

I like this one. Try this: crop this into a horizontal by cropping below the feet about half way between the feet and the bottom of the picture, and above an equal distance between the tip of the coyote's ear and the visible base of the centered tree. Leave the width the way it is and it should frame out at 16x20.
I like the other, but would have liked it a lot more had the animal been looking to his right.
