I knew I was gonna get butchered on this one, but it suddenly doesn't matter what all the 1's and 2's think. I set out with this shot to do one thing: See if I could produce something that Yura would appreciate.

That's a blue ribbon in my book. Thanx for the vote of confidence Y :-)

The images produced the desired effedt on the intended audience? I would certainly call that a success as well.

I liked it. I rated it a 7. Hey, look, I placed 4 above you at 202 with 6 1's and 6 2's. |

I agree ... is that a story from Ambrose Bierce? I didn't see the movie either ...
BTW: that kind of bridge is spelled "trestle" : ) |

BTW: Yes, this is Ambrose Bierce. Most people have probably never seen the movie, although the scifi buffs will recognize it from The Twilight Zone.
Here's a link to IMDB and a quick time presentation of a remake I guess that will explain why I chose this movie Watch a trailer

Wow. *blush*. I'm flattered, seriously. Thank you.
I think the shot is immaculate and if that was your goal, you've succeeded 100%... Especially so, provided this is not a typical shot that you would normally take, judging by your portfolio.
I gave this a 9 and not a 10, because i thought at the time that a deeper depth of field and perhaps a fill-in flash would be in order here. However, now that i think about it, i have no idea whether that was possible with your lens and other circumstances. Not even sure what it is on the photo... (and like to keep it that way, don't tell =).
Otherwise, i think it's a very good industrial abstract, with excellent composition and overall appeal.
Thanks again for a totally unexpected encouragement for me too. |

Your voting results distribution is a perfect bell. Which suggests nothing out of the ordinary in terms of voter intentions. This is a half empty half full situation, focus on the positive side. You had 13 8's and 7 9's. Virtually identical results from the positive side -there's no reason to say you were "butchered". You could also say you did very well. And your commentor scores are exceptionally high for that result.

'Butchered' meaning that in a technical sense on a practically open challenge (the sky really was the limit in the details), that I can see no reason to give anyone ones in this challenge unless they left the cap on.
This particular shot in my book and most of the commenter's book was above a seven, however I am left to assume that most of the one's came from a group of people who neglected to read the actual details of the challenge which indicated you did not actually have to have any relation to a movie in the actual photgraph. I am left to think that to them, I did not 'meet the challenge' because those who voted on the low side left nothing to allow me to understand how I missed the mark on reaching them.
Please don't misunderstand. I really do not care how many one's I got except in the sense that I have nothing to work from should I ever decide to reshoot this scene. I knew before submitting that the DPC curve would result in about a 4.5. I have yet to be able to produce a solid 'everyone goes wow' shot for a challenge. I was happy to reach a 5. I was estatic to see that the person I chose to try to reach by going abstract actually saw it, voted, and commented.
I spent the whole week watching that 4.2 slowly climb to a 4.7 and kept saying to myself, I wonder what Yura would think of this abstract? I wonder, I wonder...now I know, and I'm happy as a clam. 8-D

I don't understand how you can be technically butchered in this context. In this context "butchered" is a figurative psychological term. A useful insight, that saves people grief and stress, which I learned from a somewhat famous performance psychologist, is to avoid terms like I'm gonna get: butchered, killed, murdered. It sets our minds up for stress because your brain will think in that negative graphic context and create undue stress for yourself. It's more useful and less stressful to say for example "It will be a 'challenge' avoiding voter 1's". It's a simple change in psyche that really improves one's outlook.

This is totally subjective. How a person votes is dependent on where the voter calibrates his notion of what "Bad" and "Good" (as appears on the voting scale) is. Everyone has different calibrations -sometimes wildly different. Me, for example, I do give out ones -that's what the scale is for. Otherwise it would be a scale from 2-10. I used to study marketing and one poll result phenomenon is that many people avoid voting extremes (1 or 10). Pollsters have to adjust for this sometimes. If I could, I would give a photo that left their lenscap on a '0'.
