Just to play devil's advocate here, you shouldn't have to tell the viewer what they are looking at. It's up to them to decide.

Titles! Mmm this has been brought up many times in the past. So what do you do?

Some people say it affects the way they vote
Some people say it does not affect the way they vote

You cant win!

Myself I dont take any notice of the title (apart from Movie Title challenges!)

What I do not like is people making a title too long so that it nearly ends up as sentence!

Maybe we should use 'Untitled' for all our entries and let our eyes do what they are supposed to - look at a image, it should be enough

Look, whether you like my art or not there is a point that is missed about titles. Let us say I focus on a concept. Oftentimes the title is born concurrent with the visual mental representation of the image. The inverse also applies, that is the title is added later. However, many artist do not lightly coin a title to an image.

You can argue that the title is insignificant. Well, at certain times that argument is very lame. Take the New years resolutions challenge. I was going to name mine "To do better morphs in 2005" Well, what merit does this title have to be married to this image? None. Instead, I named it, " Wasting away in Resolutionville" I was asked what is the resolution? and many voters asked themselves such a question. Well, my intent was to make the voter think that more people than not do not adhere to resolutions and do waste their lives making them but never following through.

So right before challenge time I debated the titles and decided not to lead the voter, rather let them put it together. If they miss it, I will take my hit but keep the title that is important to me.

So, yes, in many cases the title is merely an after thought but in others it is a vital part of the artwork. The title is not meant to explain rather to complement. A great abstactionist painted a mural-like image. At sixteen I looked at it and it was beyond my conprehension. It was splashes of colors going in all directions. I went to the credit tag, it read, "The day after New Year." Ah, On my way home and until today I think of this work and those that would miss its message.

It doesn't much matter, IMO, if a title (just as much as the photo itself) is understood. The photographer himself may not have an intellectual understanding of his own work. It is his job to create a thing, no more than that.

The title should work though in an artistic sense. It should either simply name the picture without including a redundance or charge it by whatever means are effective and appropiate.

None that I perceive. It's only "trouble" if you actually care and more often than not, I don't. I'm not big on pussy-footing around, it burns too many calories.

hahaha

Sure you can. For group 1 (the affected voters), give it a great title. Group 2 will never notice! ;-)

Who has actually said the title affects the way they vote? I've read lots of people THINKING this happens, but few to none who say they actually do it.

Well, it would have to be a hell of a title to affect my vote. Titles can, easily, effect my vote. A good title can raise it, a poor one can pull it down. An offensive one to civilised nature can send it to the basement, unless, of course, the offense is appropiate and well placed.

You can't enter a challenge without a title. You can call your shot "untitled", or " ... "; but you can't enter the challenge without putting something in the title space. If it's required it should be read, not ignored. The title and the image together are the entry we are voting upon.
