This photo is called "Different".
I'd like your critiques and comments.
Thanks!

Doesn't do anything for you?

I quite like the content and the shallow DOF but I dislike the change in lighting from left to right - especially as it means I lose the shape of some of the burnt bits of match stick.

nice BW conversion :)
the perspective is a little off i think. you can get away with the focal point being so close to the bottom of the frame if your perspective is lower, or if the lighting leads you to it. as it is I was drawn towards the middle of the pic, which only found a blurry match. as it stands, i really had to search for the subject of the photo. it's a fairly subtle distinction, but i think a significant one. our eye tends to naturally go to the 'thirds' or to where the lighting leads us.
I'd try probably have tried to draw the viewer to the sharply focused match with lighting, and perhaps move it a little higher within the same frame.
P
*edit: hell i've read what i wrote three or four times and i still don't know if it makes any sense. i know what i'm trying to say...do you? :)

I do understand, thank you.
That is the flipside of the Photo A Day project. It's 11 pm and I'm just happy to get a photo done and I'm ecstatic when I'm somewhat pleased with it like this one. I fear I'm setting the bar too low. With a little extra time and care (and lighting) I could have taken a much better photograph. At least it gives me an idea to revisit. I feel like I'm saying that every day, though!
Thanks again...

OK, I was a little brief on my first comment to be any help. When I look at the thumb I like what I see. When I open it up I am disapointed becuase the perspective seems to change. The thumb looks as is the sticks are falling. Cool. The actual image looks flat. Maybe that helps. It is not always easy to describe why you do or don't like something.
