I am NOT complaining about the score in Bokeh, I did allright although personally I was hoping for a 6+ score with this one but in my experience photos get the ratings they deserve and who can complain being in the middle?
Anyway, I at least really like it as you can see in the descriptions and here is the question. Did I get a lower score because people thought it didn´t meet the challenge or just simply didn´t like it? I am just curious since I got 3 favorites, all of them in the challenge.
Don´t be afraid to throw critizism my way, I am trying to learn and I can take it but keep it constructive.

Its a nice photo but in my opinion it's not bokeh, just shallow dof and blurry.

I think a partail reason was the thought that it might not fit in the challenge because there is no defined background. I personally feel as if it did fit in with the challenge... but there are always differing opinions. Another reason might be the intense blue tones. I'd like to hear some opinions on this also. |

I gave it a 4, which means I liked the image, but believed it didn't fit with my definition of bokeh.
In my scoring if an image doesn't meet the challenge the max it can get is a 5, so the image itself is fine.
**editted - first sentence should have read DID NOT fit - doh **

Well I gave this shot a 4. My reasoning behind it being. I felt the Brokeh was a little weak and that it did not enhance the image. Second reason for giving it a low score was that I just did not like the blue while unusual I just did not like the unatural look of it. However the rose itself was crisp and well shot. The lighting was good and it was unusual. All pluses in my book. I don't know what other people saw but that my thoughts and reasoning...

I don't think by any stretch of the imagination this picture has "bokeh"; neither in the technical sense nor in the artistic sense suggested by the rules of the challenge. Frankly, I'm amazed it scored as well as it did. Chalk it up to the fact that it's a very nice picture.

I would have to agree with bear music on this one. If it softens the blow at all, I am of the opinion that a great number of the entries in this challenge failed to meet the requirements of the challenge.
You may wish to peruse the contents of some of the previous threads which contained some very good definitions of what exactly constitutes good "Bokeh".
Happy shooting.

Nice shot, but doesn't fit the challenge. A quick read through of the challenge explanation tells me that this doesn't fit. Bokeh isn't the same as just using DOF.
P.S.I didn't vote, but if I did this probably wouldn't even score on the radar. If it doesn't fit the challenge, personally, I give it a 1. Don't get me wrong, this is a great image on it's own: just not in that particular challenge.

Allright, fair enough, seems my understanding of "bokeh" is not the same as most peoples definition, I think I need to do some reading up on the subject. Thanx for giving your honest opinions and to RayEthier, are you kidding? Please, I am a big boy and you don´t have to soften any blows, your comment was helpful and I didn´t take no offense, thanx for taking the time to post to this thread, as to all of you.
Anyone else have some input? |

Greedy, aren't we? Just joking. You DID get a lot of replies, though. My requests usually fade away unobserved. (Thanks, Falc! for your comment!) My, I must need more coffee.
Anyway, I voted your photo a 5. It shows that you worked on it and did a very nice job, but I felt it was soft focus and not bokeh. :D
adding: "worked on it" What I mean by this is that you put great effort into photographing your submission and the quality of that effort was evident in your photo. I didn't mean that you ps'd it.

The only thing I see that hurts this image is the foreground blur. The one out of focus petal that is about the fourth petal below the center of the bud about a third of the way up the picture throws off the balence for the whole picture. That one petal looks as if it should be a major player in the composition. If you would have pulled the focus back about a 1/4 inch and closed down the aperature 1/3 - 2/3 of a stop this would have been a much stronger image. I gave it a 5 which seems to be close to the mean.

There are two reasons it scored lower than expected: One, the bokeh is not particularly good. It just has a soft focus. Two, it is a flower and voters get jaded seeing flowers.
Personally, I think it rates right up there with John Setzler's image "Pianissimo" that finished 3rd in the Soft Focus challenge:
Not to worry... it is a terrific image. It was just entered in the wrong challenge.
