Hi - after hanging out here for almost a year and a half, I've finally become an official paying member tonight. Entered my first member's challenge and now I'm going to ask for a little input.

Sept 2003 my husband and I purchased a Canon Powershot G3 that I've been playing with. Just last week we upgraded to the Canon Rebel. This is the first pic that I liked from the new camera. I really like the expression, but I'm biased. And of course I'm well aware of the hatred for pet pictures, but I can't resist a willing and cheap model.

Thanks!

I think it is a fine pet portrait, but could benefit from better white balance. In tungste room lighting, I often find that the 10D (I assume the 300D is similar in this respect since the cams are so closely related) gives this type of result, and I always shoot RAW indoors so I don't have to worry about it.

Edit: forgot, welcome to the asylum!

Thanks! I hate flash and I'm a complete amateur, so I will be looking for techniques to shoot without it. I have much to learn.

Photo looks pretty good.

As for white balance, especially indoors, it's tough to get it right with auto (except with the flash, then it seems good). Read your book on how to set a custom white balance. It takes about 10 seconds to do and will make it spot-on every time.

Obviously, shooting in RAW would be the best way, but I, personally, don't have the memory for that or the time to process everything afterwards. If you had a desired shot in mind, it might be worth it for RAW, but I certianly wouldn't use it for everything (oh...and snow really confuses my 300d anyway so set white balance off a nice spot of white snow).

Welcome to the boards and ignore my rants I go on every now and then -- really, I'm a good guy.

Congrats on your membership and new camera. Here is a quick edit I did to adjust the color-cast. I left the steps I used in the comments. Hope you don't mind.
