Not to complain.......... ok I'll complain anyway. I have noticed that the DPC community tends to do little if no commenting on poor images with low scores in comparison to those great shots with high scores. If an image is great I am sure the photographer who took the shot Is well aware of the great potential in his/her image. I am in no way saying that shots of great potential should not be commented on, it is just I feel if an image is of poor quality the photographer could gain from the advice of others. To me I would find this to be a learning experience that would improve on my future shots.
I do not feel insulted by constructive criticism but I am a little insulted when someone will score an image low without providing the photographer with some insight on how to improve on his/her shot
This last submission I did not expect to score high but would appreciate some comments beside the scores.

I've felt the same way and thus have made a decision to comment on all "Best of 2004" images as detailed in this thread.
My movie picture was in my mind, one of my best entries (possibly my first 6), yet my score is 5.05 and the only comments I've received tell me how incredible my picture is...then why the hell is my score so low?!?
With my decision to vote on all 531 images in the "Best of", those that score low will have at least one comment on why their image is not up to par.

This is typical to happen. If you really want to learn forget about the comments and be proud when you get one...
This is what i have to say if you want to learn go out throught the site and visualize many photos of diferent people, maybe start with the ribbons or whatever start somewhere and see how the quality of the image is, see what you've got and see what other people shoot.
Start shooting more, play around with things then be your own judge of your own image see what you could have done to improve it. if you don't see anything just keep it, later when you start noticing imropvements on your own go back to that image and see what was wrong with it.
When i first started on this site i didn't have great scores not that i don't have them still but i have been improving on my own and with some comments i sometimes recieve.´
Try to improve on your own by seeing other peoples work but stick with your own style... Hope this helps you out.
And don't forget practice a lot, thats one way up the ladder.
Maybe wrote on the wrong thread but doesn't matter hope this helps anyway.
Your photo my be liked by some and maybe others don't like just go on. take a better one next time and next time and so on.

The only entries that you'll find with lots of comments are the very good ones, and the really really bad ones. |

I started this year leaving a comment for every vote I cast. So far it is going well but not perfect. Where I use to vote on 100% of the challenge entries, I still try but but feel commenting is most important. It's hard because I have only been averaging 25 to 45% vote cast. I also have tried to point out the good and bad in each photograph I vote on as I see it. I just hope the time I spend commenting helps someone.
