I am considering buying an EOS-1Ds or EOS-1Ds MarkII.

If you are the owner of one of these models can you tell me which of the two you would suggest? What are the pros and cons of each camera?
If you were buying one today, would you go right to the MarkII or is the 11 pixel just as good?

Thanks, Jeff O.

There is no reason to get the 1Ds instead of the 1Ds II. There is a 2 year difference in technology between the 1Ds and 1Ds II. The 1Ds II supports ETTL-2, has a CMOS sensor vs a CCD for the 1Ds (less noise with the CMOS), the 1Ds II has a bigger buffer and can shoot at 5fps instead of the 3 fps of the 1Ds, battery life is better...on and on and on. Of course now there is a US$2000 difference between a 1Ds and 1Ds II, are the differences worth $2000, that's up to you to decide.

I have the 1Ds (currently being held capive in NJ by Canon techs) and I would say you need to think about how large you want to print, how fast you want to shoot, and how much you want to pay. I would get the Mark II if both were for sale when I got mine, but as my father always told me, I have no respect for money.

My camera does slow me down at times waiting for the images to load onto the CF when shooting bursts. Not anywhere near as iritating as this damn Rebel, but still.

With the 1Ds I have been able to enlarge images to over four foot wide without any grain or noise. Go to my website and look under Landscapes. You will see an image titled Burnt Corn, Alabama. In the 54" print version you can see the nails in the tin of the roof and read the licesne plate on the car. This was one of the First pictures I took when I got my 1Ds. The image was printed on an Epson 7600 wide format. The image was shot handheld using the 85 1.2, Aperture-Priority, 1/1000 sec, f/5.6, ISO 160.

Just think what the Mark II would be capable of.

I love the speed of the mark ii, it is amazing, i recently bought the 20d as a back up and for the extra reach, but boy the speed of the mark ii, that being said. I am also getting into stock fotog and while many places will take 8mp as sort of the smallest they want people to go for selling shots. SO I do squeak by for most places, some however want original file sizes to be -40-60 mb and not all images (esp when cropped will be this big) so having the extra mp may be good. I think it depends on what you want it for. If I were patient (which I am not) I would wait til they make the markii speed with 22mp -- you could be waiting a long time and be broke in the end.

You mean the EOS 1D Mark II or EOS 1Ds Mark II which both came out recently?

The EOS 1D Mark II doesn't have a full frame sensor. Not in the same ball park.

They both use a CMOS sensor :P
