I've taken on a local band as a 'project', who I'm following around small venues for free, so I can make all my mistakes on them and experiment.
Here are some shots from last night... the lighting was terrible but I think I rescued some okay shots from it. Please comment!

Great shots... Cerainly among the better band photography I've seen.\

The only suggestion for improvement I can offer is in the second photo. It seems the exposure is a little hot on her shirt. In the example below I applied a gradient layer in multiply mode. I'm not sure I'm totally happy with the results but I offer it as a suggestion.

Hi Bobster,

nice shots, my favourites are #1 and #2, but ClubJuggle is right about the shirt. I have some band shots to take for a Wakefield based band. I'll have to compare notes with you ;-)

Really cool shots. I've been following a local band around too and the lighting is always awful, especially on drummers who are nearly always in total darkness. They're the ones who need the most lights for photography too as they move the most!

nice shots! When you're shooting a band or whatever in bad lighting, do you use a tripod or just bump up the ISO?

I shoot with my 50mm f/1.8 and bump the ISO as needed. A tripod is impractical for that type of shooting and does not help with motion blur.

Great to see these, Bob! You are always shooting in the moment and never let any of your techniques or "look" get old. Your work is always fresh and exciting. These are terrific and very clever considering the lighting issues you faced.

Love the drummer shot...it's got a bit more "rawness" to it that I like for band shots.

Personally I like it when there's low light, you gotta boost the ISO and the levels in PS later..get that awesome grain. (for rock/punk bands anyway). Doesn't make for great newspaper prints...but whatever.

Thanks everyone for the comments, much appreciated. It's so much more challenging to get good shots in pubs and small venues than the shots I was getting in the summer at the large festivals with amazing lighting and backdrops. I use ISO3200 which the Minolta handles very well, and a tripod is not necessary as the image stabilisation works pretty well if I want to go for a motion blur shot. However, I just won a 50mm 1.7 lens on EBay for £22 (woohoo!), so my ISO levels can start coming down when I get that. I'm also saving for a 100mm F2.8 macro lens, which will no doubt come in handy for gig photography.

Nice Pic's. Myself I like the first shot best.
Well done.
