Went to a preview of the NAIAS yesterday (opens to the public this weekend I believe) and snapped a few pics.

Here are a couple of the pics, most with little editing (if any).

Wow, great shots and angles there. Did you set a custom white balance for these shots?

Thanks, deapee. And no, I did not set any custom white balance (meant to bring a coffee filter to try that out, but I forgot). There are thousands of spotlights directed at these cars, so it was difficult to find an angle where the reflections weren't too bad.

wow that's impressive that the auto wb got it just right under the lighting. Maybe some day I can get to a car show before the doors open :-D

The first one is my favorite. Would you mind listing your post processing on that one?

All I did was clone out about 12 to 15 spotlight reflections (couple more to do), and cloned out some small distracting lights/signs in the background. Then resized and probably sharpened. I haven't had any time to play with the pics (in addition to the auto show, barf-o-rama 2005 has started at my house and I've been knee deep in toddler puke all last night and tonight, but that's probably too much info, eh?). :-)

Here is the original file (just cropped a bit and resized):

I didn't pay much attention, but now that you mention it, it is surprising that the Rebel managed so well on auto WB. That is my one knock against my new cam - it struggles in indoor lights.

Wow...that is a very good one -- much less pp than I had imagined.

bump for ya.

How did you manage to get into a preview of the Autoshow? I would nearly kill to get into the preview...

As it stands, I am heading their bright and early tomorrow morning, hopefully to beat a bit of the early rush...

It's darn tough to get good shots of the displays with everyone and their brother standing all around bumping into you and poking straight into a shot at the worst possible moment...

It's that age old adage, it's not what you know, it's who you know. Wednesday is supplier preview day and they give out a limited number of tickets to auto companies and suppliers. In some ways it is more crazy than when the general public is there since design engineers crawl all over the cars (and under them, which is funny to see at an auto show) to see what the competition is doing, check out their own product in action, etc.

There are fewer people than when the show is open to the public, but still a lot of people. Another nice thing is that even some of the more ritzy displays, like the Ferrari and Lambo displays, were opened up so people could walk right up to the cars which the general public will not be able to do.

Now what I don´t understand is why someone would go to a car show and not take pictures of the pretty ladies in bikinis and post them, but that´s just me :o)

Anyway, good shots but the first one definately stands out as great in my opinion.

(please post the bikini shots later though and make sure you let me know)

No bikins, sorry. This is one of them "classy" auto shows. All the models are fully clothed (usually in business suits or evening gowns), and most of the higher profile spokesmodels were not there. The cars are about the only attention getters on supplier preview day (lots of techies milling about, so maybe they figure the models would go largely unnoticed anyway?).

Probably right. I know that if I were going to a camera show and I was at the Canon booth and the 1Ds mkII was within my grasp I wouldn´t even notice a butt naked supermodel standing right in front of me.

//www.ibogleif.dk/uk/Thetest-uk.html <- to prove my point but sort of the other way around (warning: not for the faint of heart)

Love the first shot also, but don't overdoo the cloning. For example I think you should leave the reflection on the front spoiler as it now looks a bit flat inthe cloned version. The background and window are well done.

Hope your knee deep in barfomania has reduced itself to an acceptable level. ;-)
