I just downloaded it. It is probably good to learn on this program before moving onto PS. I am having a great time trying to figure this out. Gimp is a very complicated program, it is hard to imagine a program like Photoshop being even more complicated!! HELP!!

I download Gimp about 2 weeks ago and have been working with it since. I've not worked with PS, so I don't know how it compares, but some of the tips I've been given referring to PS, I've been able to duplicate without too much trouble in Gimp. Is there something in particular you are trying to do?

I havent tried that program but about PS complicity I wouldn´t worry to much. If you start using you´ll learn. Most people use few basic actions and when you´ll get used to them you can start to try other things and therby learn more and more each time.

Something in particular?? well I downloaded gimp about 20 minutes ago and right now all im trying to do is figure out what the layers are and how to change background colors...etc..its gonna take some time without a doubt

You can think of layers like individual transparencies on an overhead projector (if you're familiar with some older technology ;) You can duplicate your image onto a new layer and adjust colors, contrast, etc., and then blend it back into the original layer using an assortment of different methods. Your best bet is probably just to give things a try and see what happens. You get to have fun and learn at the same time!

Playing with it and seeing what it's capable of is the best way (though there are dozens of tutorials and how-tos on the net; and many PS tutorials are easily done in GIMP, too). The GIMP is awesome, as long as you're not doing CMYK stuff (that's reportedly planned but not yet implemented).
I haven't willingly used windows in over 8 years; Linux is my full-time OS, so I know the GIMP well.
For those out there with RAW capable cameras and want to give GIMP a try...check out UFRaw. It's a nice, user-friendly GIMP plug-in for reading and adjusting RAW images. FYI..it uses dcrawdcraw - the RAW decoding software used by Photoshop and several other applications for Windows and Mac.
While hunting down the URL, I see that a new version was released today...featuring a standalone app.
