I didn't think particularly long or hard about my submission for the cnadid challenge - I really liked my shot (partly for sentimental reasons - it's been a pretty tough year for my grandfather, and this shot carries some of the emotions of that for me), but I think that may have clouded my judgment a little and stopped me from playing around with alternate versions.

So I just wanted to know whether people liked this crop

better than my submission

Also, I was just wondering whether my average score can be put down to the negative space, the fact that it might have looked staged or whether it's just an average shot ? I'd like to start taking more people shots so any pointers or opinions would be great.

Cheers

Anders

The picture looks muddy for a B/W. At least on my monitor. I do like the tighter crop better. If you would have taken care of those 2 things alone you would have scored much better.

Besides, your score was not that bad.

I strongly prefer the original framing, which uses the negative space to great & poignant effectiveness. I think your score is more a relection of the muddiness of the mage than its framing. I did a little quick work with selections and levels to illustrate a slight tweak:

Lovely picture, when you get into it. Try tweaking the original and see if you like it.

Thanks Robert, your tweak definately looks much crisper (even on my useless monitor) - I preferred the one with the negative space - thought it drew the attention down onto him and heightened the emotional impact (for me anyway). I just wondered whether the shot suffered because its a bit hard to make out the details of his face in the resized version.

I know, didn't mean to come off as a whinger - just looking to improve :P.

I'll revise that. After looking at them both a few more times and a little longer I do prefer the looser cropped image. Kinda grows on you.

The original as tweaked is unreal... yip, this pic should have done better, great pic. Love old people, they have a beauty of their own.
