First step is I ran through the Shadow/Highlight Adjustment in CS.

Here are the settings:

Then I converted to Lab Mode and selected the Lightness Channel and then convert to Greyscale.

Levels adjustment changed Highlights Output to around 222, so the skin isn't so white.

Minor brightness (-5) & contrast (+5) adjustment.

USM (100% /.6px / 3 threshold)

For the quadtone, after converting to Greyscale, I converted to Duotone and used Setz's "Sepia Mild Quad" quadtone setting. Then did the levels and brightness/contrast and USM adjustments.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that! I'll work them now.

Well, I processed all of the b&w images pretty close to what was suggested by cbeller, put them all on CD, and printed a contact sheet and 3 of my favorites as 8x10's. Aside from saying "my hair looks terrible- must be the lighting" she seems very happy with them and said she will recommend me to her friends. Thanks all for your help!

Good work Ahaze! Don't worry about her hair: you're not her stylist.

I shot a wedding in the rain for an older woman (who refused to book an alternate indoor location) and she then b*tched her heart out that her hair was flat in the pictures. Must've been the lighting too ;-)

Actually I'm a little concerned that she's talking about the tones that I brought out with shadow/highlight. I really like how cbeller's suggested adjustments looked, perhaps she doesn't. Not that it's really *that* big a deal, she is getting them for free and it was really just a passing comment. Overall she seems very happy.

For future reference, Mortenson did an excellent book entitlerd 'The Model'; one of the premiere publications on posing. It covers lighting setups to enhance people's appearance, taking factors of their appearance into account.

It is an older out of print book, and can probably be found at //www.alibris.com

In case anyone's interested.

Cool, thanks for that! One of the things that surprised and pleased me was the straight appearance of her teeth in this shot compared to the others, thanks to the position of her head. She said she really liked it for that reason as well:

I was a little concerned about having her not face me straight on, since turning the head creates lines in the neck- but I think I handled that well with posing and post processing.

I am very glad I tried so many different things with her, it definitely helped me discover some things I didn't know. Looking forward to doing it again.

Thanks again to everyone here for the suggestions!

I'm glad my suggestions helped.

Here is a really good book on lighting in different portrait situations. It actually includes fashion and glamour settings as well, but there is a lot of valuable lighting information.

Photographing People: Portraits-Fashion-Glamour

It will show a photo and then break down the lighting setup for that photo. Excellent book!

Woot!! She said everyone at rehearsal last night was raving about her headshot and wanted to know who took it! Yippee! This is the one she chose to use in the foyer and program for her current play:
