How's your Bokeh score? ;-)

I'm in the same boat...

Bokeh - 5.13
Movie - 5.03
One comment each both good and from folks opinions I really respect ....

Weird cause I thought my movie photo blew my Bokeh shot out of the water... hopefully I'm suffering from the "has nothing to do with the movie" voters as mine does not, and not because my shot is just *GASP* crappy. ;-)

I was really hoping to break the 5.0 barrier, or at least to know what I am doing wrong to get such low scores, but as far as I can see, people only comment on the great pictures, unless it is someone saying something smartass...Its really dissappointing. Maybe I need to look for a photo site for beginners? these 3.6's are just depressing me.

Best thing to do is learn from yourself not from comments, my best suggestion is to copy some work. Buy a book or two, and try to capture an image you like. Follow the subject, lighting, composition everything to get it as close as possible then see your scores rocket. After time you'll then get better idea of what works and what you think is a good photo will probably change dramatically. You will also learn so much more about lighting etc.

Well I'm flattered that we were thought of but that's a big no!

We know each others log in but no one else does. :) BTW my wife Heavy does not have any entries being voted on at the moment. But after my Brown ribbon for NY Resolution I'm happy to say I'm back on track with a couple of solid 5.7s in Movie and Bokeh.

I would suggest that you post your photos in the forum for further comments/critiques after the challenge has finished. Its hard to comment on all the photo's that deserve a comment during voting so at least that way you can get some extra feedback.

It takes some time to learn what dpc voters like to see, I'm only part of the way there.

I really thought that there would be some great photos in this movie challenge beings it is pretty much wide open, but not really. I wonder if people suffered the same thing I did thinking to hard for something thats easy.

well, maybe I am in the wrong place, is there a site like this for people who don't have all the specialized equipment? studios, special lights, etc? I don't have any of that, just a camera I like and would like to learn how to do more with.

Sierra, you are in the right place. look at the page for your camera!!! There are some great images without all the bells and whistles. Your goal here is to become a better photography with what you have. Some very simple images (i.e. a good eye and their camera) have done extremely well at this site.

Don't be discouraged. My camera isn't that great, but I try my best and am learning. That's all that matters in the end.

Take a look at what a quick photoshop edit can do to your "Cute Damien" photo:

I say to stick it out it can be tough but worth it. Look at my profile, I had some bombs early on too, but if you keep participating and reading up on what the winners did for compostition and lighting etc., you will get technically better very fast!

No matter what scores we receive, It's the joy we get from photography. Take my score of 3.90 as of this posting, to me this is not a true reflection of my talents but I had fun doing the shot. I would be scoring higher had I taken a little more time but I had fun setting up the shot, I even involved my children in the process and to me thats more important than my score. Remember its not all about our scores but the pure enjoyment of the entire process.HOME.COMCAST.NET/~DDYJR

Gone down from the coveted 6, but I got a favorite, so who's complaining?

Please elaborate on how the photo with washed out colors and bad contrast is better than the edited version.

That's what I'm guessing.

Might have to do with the monitor. I am having massive problems with my PC and went over to my father's to use his last night, and the difference was disturbing. While on my monitor the colors and lighting of my photos seem true to life and what I saw with my eyes, on his computer my photos look like someone gave a 4 year old a camera and said "go to it".

Washed out, bad colors, bad contrast, the lighting was completely different....but according to his new Dell flatscreen monitor, those were the appropriate settings. A particular picture of a product that I import was way off on his compared to real life in terms of the color, so I know his monitor is wrong...but so are other people's I'm sure. The dog might look great on your monitor, awful on another person's.

The edited version exhibits too much contrast to the point that detail is starting to be lost in the dark areas. There is a bizarre blur on the jeans and their color is over saturated.

I blurred the jeans to put the focus on the dog.

And I'm sure the "over saturated" color of the jeans is actually the true to life color of them. Yes, I do admit there is a little too much blurring, but still the zipper had to be blurred. It was too close to the dog's face and was a major distractions.

I'm not too surprised by the low scores, I can pick out 100 things wrong my photo... but at least I've beaten my last entry's score!

I agree...which is why I did the picture the way I did..when I sharpened or upped the contrast, it seemed almost like a drawing to me. and the color situation was a problem for me, Im learning!! ;-}

ANd thank you all for the help and encouragement!
