Ugh. I just got kicked with an inexcusable 1. There are times when I understand that a voter might have different taste or not see the challenge connection. This isn't one of those times. Maybe "Bullcrap!" got a new account? ;-)

Excuse my ignorance but: how can you see what ciphers people give during the voting?

It requires a calculator and lack of a life.

Skip- Ouch! I think you brought friends to the bash. Down .17 in just three votes. May I suggest a more worthy target? ;-P

Pano,

Those among us who understand computer language and/or spreadsheets have created routines to extrapolate recent scores by inputting the data since the last acore. Extreme example: 1 vote posted, average score 10. 2 votes posted, average score 8: second vote was 6.

These people are hitting the update button frequently and transferring the data to their program.

Robt.

Ya'll can ease up a bit.
Bokeh suffered overnight as I expected it would and has dropped to into the 6.4 realm, which is a bit more realistic.
On the other hand, I just saved a bunch on my car Insurance by switching to Geico my Waldo bokeh the 7 barrier finally!

Bear music
this works upto a point what about those who carry out I kind of staged voting with the bumping up (hopefully) or down this will muck the systems up unless your updating very regularly

6.4 only? You must be losing it! LOL

However, the laws of physics dictate that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, meaning that you would be required to balance your initial actions by focusing on this , another great target. (hehehehehe)

My best showing in eons. At 45 votes I was around 7.1. Got a few troll votes since then but I'm happy. I do expect it to continue to go down though, that's usually what happens when I start out well.

Lisa,

I encourage you to find some way to grow in your photography hobby - either here at DPC, or a camera club, or other online forum. I have enjoyed it more than ever by being challenged to try new things. A few of my favorite photos have done very poorly here, but it's because they mean something to ME, maybe not to others.

I take pictures for friends as well, and they all love my shots (even though I may be critical of the results.) I think there are many places where you can get some genuine positive feedeback from people who just enjoy sharing your photos and the stories that may go with them, without so much empahsis on critiquing - as is the case here at DPC. I think it's wonderful to have both worlds, because without the critiquing I wouldn't be learning as much. However, everyone likes to think others are simply enjoying their photos...so I think it's important to find that affirmation elsewhere if you feel you aren't getting it here.

Also, if you are enjoying the shots you get, then it is certainly time and energy well spent.

Just my two cents worth. I hope it's helpful.

Very well said and I couldn't agree more. One has to be happy with their work regardless of the populous vote. I no longer am entering something I am not happy with, and find many entries I have really liked may not have scored well. Still doesn't change MY opinion on it though.
This is all virtual. What does matter is what you feel looking at it and what it means to you - no one else.

I like my image. It is not my initial idea (ran out of time for that) but it is more the first desritpion above, the melting and letting the foreground shine. It is scoring a bit lower than i had hoped for (nothing too unusual in that!)

From my initial look see at the entries, lots of shallow DOF, and several like mine. Many good ones.

However, i have a comment (part of quoted here) "The short definition of Bokeh from KenRockwell.com, which I am using for voting on this challenge: "Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light." that is narrow (as the commenter states in the comment) and me thinks that will be my downfall.

Yep, exactly my fear.

Just so you know, every image I vote on is getting that comment from me. Levels the playing field and lets the shooters know where I stand and why I'm voting the way I am.

In light of your recent portfolio shots, I'll be lucky if you don't make the top 30. ;-)
