I found that a lot of the pictures in this challenge could have been entered in portrait challenges: some even look very set up. OK, we're talking people pictures here but what I mean is that there seems to be a close emotional connection between the photographer and the subject(s) in a lot of shots. My impression of this challenge was that the subjects should not know that they are being shot (and definitely not pose for it). What do you think?

I think this has already been discussed elsewhere.

While there is no razor-sharp division between different the genres, I feel, a candid may well make an excellent portrait, in some cases. The reverse, however, would be an unlikely thing.

When a gesture, an expression or other circumstance relates a universally recognizable human emotion, a memorable moment which goes beyond itself and an inherent context, we should, IMO, have a workable candid. When this particular quality can be attributed to person in such a way as to identify him or, at least, raise an interest in aspects of his character or personality, we may have a decent portrait too.
