While there is no razor-sharp division between different the genres, I feel, a candid may well make an excellent portrait, in some cases. The reverse, however, would be an unlikely thing.
When a gesture, an expression or other circumstance relates a universally recognizable human emotion, a memorable moment which goes beyond itself and an inherent context, we should, IMO, have a workable candid. When this particular quality can be attributed to person in such a way as to identify him or, at least, raise an interest in aspects of his character or personality, we may have a decent portrait too.
