today was my first attempt using the new lens on my 300d at a soccer match
first impressions were dissapointing as at first the camera refused to focus at all
after switching to manual focus and then back it worked but not all the time and only up to around 135mm not above
so was it the low light under the floodlights or the shower that got everything a little damp or the fact it was around 2 degrees centigrade.
does cold weather effect the focusing of the camera |

Doesn't sound like normal behavior, tho it's possible the lighting contributed. I'd take it out on a bright day and see if it misbehaves. I very much doubt if dmapness or temperature contributed at all (unless the lens fogged up).
edit: make sure the contacts are clean.

ok I tried out again this morning
it is very dull and grey and just starting to rain
much like yesterday
the camera has been indoors all night with the lens attached
I opened the front door and tried out the AF it worked fine at all distances and zooms using 2.8
I could here it focusing
so does the cold weather really have that much of an effect on the cam or the lens |

Cold weather should not affect the focusing to the degree that you're seeing, if in fact it is the cold. Now that you've identified that the lens does focus when warm, take it out an cool it down again, and see if you experience the focus problem again.
If you do, it may be that there is something mechanically that is making it stick at low tempertatures (jelled lubricant or mechanical interference). It may also be that at low temperatures you have a poor contact between lens and camera. I'd suspect the first scenario, because if it was a contact problem, I'd expect you might have gotten an error message.
