With the addition of a new 250gb hard drive I now have plenty of working space :) I have been working hard lately on organizing my images so I could get back to working on all the photos I have taken in the last few months.
I was going through my old archived images and came across a shot I really liked at the time but was not quite sure know how to salvage it. With some recent tips I have learned in photoshop I made a quick 10 min pass at it today and came up with this version:
I think with a little more time I could create a version I really like.
All comments and suggestions are welcome as usual :)

I think that the shot is really nice. Just imo its a bit too soft, and the whites on the cub are a little blown out. I do like the overall feel of it though, and the imperfections may be reduced in photoshop? I just bought one of those hard drives myself, but still havnt gotton to organize anything. I am terrible about that! I need to do it as I go, but I am so far behind, its rediculous!

Brian
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Luckily this shot was taken in RAW mode so I can go back and work from the original.
The version I show above was processed from a converted jpg I had worked on previously and it is less than perfect :)
We were lucky the day of our visit the mother and her two new cubs were all out and feeling very frisky. They did not set still for long I had to shoot from the hip on most of the shots we got that day.

I went back to the original RAW file and cropped the image to 8x10 horizontal and processed it again.

I posted comments on both versions. I love the little details in the first version, but the second crop is better in my opinion because the blurring of the cub isn't as much of a distraction and it's nice to see more of the interaction of the cub and the mother. Overall a really gorgeous shot! |

I like the second crop much better Robin, tho I still think the first is great too. I was not a fan of the blurr action at the bottom of the vertical, I think if that alone was reduced in the vertcrop, it would be a far better end product. A very slight burn where the cub meets the parent (fur) may also help to make the twain, two.

Robin,
I am a fan of much of your work. In this case, my preference is for the original. I like the brightness better as well as the "portrait" layout.
BTW, I have errantly forgotten to congratulate you (and other Texan's) on your 2 second victory in the Rose Bowl. Heart wrenching loss for me, but a deserved win for you.

Thanks so much for the comments and suggestions :)
My thoughts were the Portrait crop provided a less distracting shot of the mother and her cub.
I thought the landscape crop became more distracting by bringing more into the image. The cubs claws are not as visible but I agree with OFreasier I like seeing the mother's leg wrapped around the cub. The landscape crop was suggested by my wife Penny. When I explained my thoughts on the two crops she understood completely but she still liked the landscape crop better. :)
Arcanist:
I will try your suggestion about slightly burning that area and see how it turns out.

I really appreciate your kind comment as always :)
I can't really say I'm sorry about the UT Longhorns LOL
If anyone else would like to leave comments or suggestions please do. If you are a newbie tell me what you see I do not bite :)
