Someone I thnk hinted at this a while back but I can't find the thread now.

I'm trying to get a feel for what the field of view will be for various lenses I'm looking at. I'm using the kit lens as a base but I just realized something I am not clear on. Are EF-S lenses still marked for 35mm equiv, so I still have to account for the magnification factor of the camera or not? i.e. is the kit lens actually 18-55mm on my camera or is it effectively like 29-88?
thanks

Yes, the difference in the EF-S lenses is that they stick further into the camera (I think) and thus are only compatible with the Rebel and 20D. You still need to multiply.

Edit/Oops--I meant 20D not EOS! Corrected above.

not compatible with EOS from what i know - solely the 20d and the 300d
i think the crop factor is still valid

29-88 (equiv. on a 35mm film camera) and only fits on digital rebel and 20d

right

I got my rebel w/o the kit lens. Hope to try one tomrrow, but i hear it's quality is lacking (image wise, relativley speaking of course). The cost of it was about $100 in the kit, i got a Tamron 28-80 for $60.(with plans to replace it next Xmas - Fathers day is for a 70-300) I have seen teh 18-55 used for about $50-60 so i may opt for one just for the improved wide angle capability at an affordable price.

A lens only has 1 focal length, so to confuse you further, yes, the lens is "actually" an 18-55mm lens. However, the field of view of this lens used on a 20D is equivalent to the field of view of an 29-88mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Lenses, including EF-S lenses, are always marked with the actual focal length. You still need to multiply by the appropriate field of view crop factor if you want to "convert" into an equivalent 35mm format.

No prob I don't find that confusing, I think I just didn't get the terminology. So to be particular picky, when someone is talking equivelency to 35mm, does that refer to the FOV with that focal length (so the long way of saying itwould be say, 80mm focal length on a 35mm frame)?

Yes--when someone mentions the "35mm equivalent" focal length, they mean equivalent in terms of field of view.
