Hi, I'd like your opinion about this photograph:
I processed it with a Holga/Lomo technique that I learned today on Trekearth from Olli Ilmanen. If you look at my Trekearth account you'll see his version of this photograph in the Workshop.
Here is the original: Marching Soldiers @ Pbase.
What was done with it (Photoshop 6)?
- cropped
- bumped up the saturation a bit
- desaturated (simple, with the desaturation option)
- changed the color balance (towards red and yellow)
- changed the brightness and contrast
- made an elliptical selection towards the edge
- ran the default photoshop vignetting action with a feathering of 100px
- filled the white layer with black
- flattened
- a lot of dodging and burning on a 50% grey overlay layer
- flattened
- painted with a very faint black on the top and bottom
- resampled to 640 wide
- Unsharp mask
- Used the add noise filter to add noise: 3% gaussian monochromatic
- Did some final dodging and burning
- Save for the web
I think it looks a lot better compared to the original and it has gotten a feel to it that it could have been taken 50 years or more ago.
Do you like it or do you hate it? More tips?
Thanks in advance. :)

I love it. Outstanding results. It truly does look like its an aged photograph. That is remarkable that you can turn something this close to a Holga out of the D70 (or any of the DSLR's).

LOVE IT. I am definitely going to check out this technique for my own use. Thanks!
Great way to turn a blah shot into something special.

You should also check out the Melancholytron from Flaming Pear. It would probably help you zip through a few of the steps of this technique as well (does great vignetting...) |

Yup agreed, great shot, vintage aged look well done.
Only thing I see wrong is the burn in the top left and right corner, too heavy and obviously photoshopped. Try to use a larger brush with less density.

Thanks for the comments people, glad you like it. The photo was made with a S602Z and not the D70, but I am sure that it doesn't matter what camera you use.

I agree, but it was a result of the vignetting action, not a brush. Perhaps I should have played with the opacity of the black layer or perhaps I should have filled the toning layer with a dark brown or dark grey tone. I did lower the intensity a bit by some dodging.
Setting the right amount of feathering was tricky.

Really?
If there are more people who would like a tutorial, I might have a more detailed (with inbetween samples and sreen shots) go at it.

I asked it last night via the contact box, but to be sure (I had an email problem this morning and have reset all the accounts on the servers altough there was no mail on them at that time), how do I do it? Not the writing, but the size of images, the amount of images/screen shots, etc etc.
