Yes, I have done a search already but still in the dark somewhat.

I had just about opted for the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro over both the Sigma and Tamron (90mm) and had decided to ship it over here from B&H, same price tag as in UK but its dollars not sterling!

I may be able to get hold of a MK1 2.8 macro and whilst its not USM the lens is within the lens collar so a hood would not be required??

Anybody used the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro MK1? is the lens quality the same just a different build quality?

I personally have the Tamron and I really like this lens. Here are 2 threads that I posted about Macro Lenses.

Tamron 90mm

Macro: Canon vs. Tamron vs Sigma

Thanks Ivan, I read them already, I read my first Tamron review today and results compared well with the Canon, Since I have a 70-200 f4l this would be used mainly for macro work so manual focussing would be the prefered option anyway (no need to worry about not having USM).

I haven't really used the Canon, but with the Tamron I find that it works better with the Manual focusing than AF. I find that the AF takes a little too long to focus correctly.

i have the 105 sigma macro lens, and i love it. i never use the AF on it, always use manual.

I have a mk1 canon 100mm f2.8 macro, and it does 'hunt' slightly for focus, its not the quietest lens in the world (Non-USM), but it is sharp and crisp.- this is with the lens, the starfish is less than 0.5cm across

The best thing is the filter thread is a 52mm which is the same as the 50mm mkII f.18, so with a reversing ring is very easy to get MASSIVE magnification (even to rival Jacko ;-)

I believe Natator has the MkI as well. Optically I believe they are very similar in performance, that is, stellar. I know there is a world of difference in the AF speed. If you are ONLY doing macro or static portrait work with it, the AF speed should not be a big concern. I really don't know how they compare in build quality, I do know the build on the USM version is very nice.

Thanks all, and its good to hear from users of the MK1, will wait to see if I can get hold of it. Have had a good christmas, battery grip, 20gb Flashtax and soon a macro lens, I'm good to myself lol
