Hi guys..

I just got my rebel a couple of weeks ago, and I used to shoot with a really old Minolta (XG1). Fot that camera I had a really big flash (Popular 3800) that gave me very good results. So yesterday I went and bought the stuff needed to plug that flash to the rebel and got very good & interesting results, but I notice that if I shoot while the flash is not ready to go, I get Err99 and the camera stops working. The flash is nowhere near of being a E-TTL, not even a TTL.

Is this normal or am I running the risk to ruin the camera.

Thanks & Best Regards.

What did you buy to make it work with your camera? Did you talk to a reputable person about it? I would say don't use it again until you can clear it up. It can fry your camera. I saw a resource on the web for compatable falshes with Canon 300D's I'll see if I can track it down.

P.S. Congrats on your Rebel.

Sorta the same question here...what is the link for the flash page iwht eh trigger voltages?

What is hte max voltage a Rebel can take?
i just got a rebel and need to know..my Fuji could take up to 400v so it was not an issue.

You can always get a slave trigger and use the old flash that way.

I got it from the local camera shop, he sold me the thing that goes on top of the camera (dont know the name of it) but that is where the cable to the flash goes, and the cable. If I look at he pictures that I took and check the exif file, it says the flash did not fire, even if it did. The only thing that he said is that I had to us it on manual everytime I use the flash (thing that I am doing) because the flash wont receive any information from the camera.

Thanks.

I found this if your interested, I am going to check it myself and will let you guys know.

Here is the link for the list of flash trigger voltages.

Apparently it has to be under 6 volts to not fry the camera.

Just a little update.

I checked the flash Volt output to the camera with a voltmeter and it was 8V, sometimes 9V, so I guess my only choice is to get one of these

//www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=245292&is=REG

to protect the camera from this and other non-canon flashes.

Just would like to thank you for your help, ant the links you supplied.

Good info. I have a 420EX but am glad to find out that I shouldn't connect any of my older flash units to my Rebel! I have some really old flash units, from the 70's. Probably should just discard these?

Discard them my direction please!

My one flash is 270v. The other is 6.75...that i will use until i can get a 550ex. I want TTL!

Now I can use my old Soligor TIF340 with the 300D... and the focus assist ligth even works! Thank you for instigating ;-)

Edit: In manual mode, of course!

It is very important to have new TTL flash such 550 or 580 EX for Rebel or similar cameras.
I could use wider aperture (f1.8 or F2) and blur the background if I had 550EX at that time ,just put it on High speed sync and no problem :
